AOC criticizes McCarthy over ChapStick auction: ‘Harming US economy’

AOC Blasts Kevin McCarthy Over Debt Negotiations

Rep. ocasio-cortez” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) slammed House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for blaming Democrats for being “extreme” during the latest debt negotiations.

“This guy swooned yesterday over MTG giving him $100k for a tube of cherry chapstick that touched his lips, so now he’s projecting his insecurity about it on TV,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted in response to McCarthy’s criticism of her and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

McCarthy’s Lip Balm Auction

McCarthy’s recent auction of his used lip balm, won by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) for $100,000, has received backlash from Democratic leaders.

“I’m honored to be able to donate $100,000 to the [National Republican Congressional Committee] to help Republicans increase our majority in 2024 and defeat the Democrats,” Greene said in a statement to Politico.

Despite the looming threat of an unprecedented default, McCarthy assured reporters that negotiations with the White House were ongoing. However, Ocasio-Cortez was quick to call out McCarthy’s role in the situation.

“Sorry, bud. The only person here holding the entire US economy hostage because they’ve completely lost control is you,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.

McCarthy’s Criticism of Democrats

“If AOC and Bernie Sanders are going to run their party, that’s not my fault,” McCarthy told White House reporters. “I’m not even sure Bernie Sanders is a registered Democrat.”

“I can’t help it if the Democrats have become so extreme, and now it’s a party of Bernie Sanders than the party where Joe Biden was elected,” McCarthy added.

Despite McCarthy’s attempts to shift blame onto Democrats, Ocasio-Cortez remains steadfast in her criticism of his actions and rhetoric.
