Ocasio-Cortez and Roberts broke up roughly two years ago and called off their engagement, according to Puck chief Washington correspondent Leigh Ann Caldwell.

“Perhaps that’s why she’s freezing her eggs,” Caldwell wrote Tuesday on X, amid questions about why Ocasio-Cortez had not married Roberts despite having gotten engaged four years ago.
The revelation comes after Ocasio-Cortez publicly documented her decision to freeze her eggs, a process she has described as “very daunting.” In her initial video discussing the procedure, Ocasio-Cortez did not mention Roberts.
Ocasio-Cortez and Roberts, a web developer, met while attending Boston University and had been together for years before getting engaged. Ocasio-Cortez confirmed their engagement in May 2022 after Roberts proposed during a trip to Puerto Rico.
Ocasio-Cortez and Roberts’s relationship has also been entangled in controversy surrounding her congressional ethics disclosures. In several filings connected to foreign travel, Ocasio-Cortez listed Roberts as her “spouse,” despite her office maintaining that the pair were not legally married.

The House Ethics Committee had separately investigated Ocasio-Cortez over her attendance at the 2021 Met Gala, though that inquiry was unrelated to her relationship with Roberts. Ocasio-Cortez remains a possible Democratic 2028 presidential candidate, telling ABC News she has not ruled out a presidential bid.
