AOC angry as border wall construction restarts, criticizes ‘Trumpy’ decision.
Infighting among Democrats: Distinguishing the True Believers from the Opportunists
When it comes to Democrats, their infighting often reveals who the radical true believers are and who are just transactional opportunists.
Recently, President Joe Biden’s administration made an announcement that they would waive existing laws and regulations to construct ”physical barriers” along the U.S.-Mexico border in Starr County, Texas.
This move was met with criticism from radical Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, who denounced it as “Trumpy” and called on Biden to reverse course.
The Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, cited an “acute and immediate need” to prevent further illegal crossings as the reason for this decision.
Mayorkas referred to the Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley Sector as a point of “high illegal entry” and highlighted the significant number of illegal entrants encountered by Border Patrol agents in that sector alone.
While Mayorkas used phrases like “physical barriers” and ”additional fencing,” he avoided using the word “wall.”
Despite this, Ocasio-Cortez responded with outrage over the new “physical barriers,” stating that the Biden administration was not required to expand construction of the border wall and should not have waived environmental laws to expedite the building.

Ocasio-Cortez’s objections stem from the suspension of more than two dozen federal laws by Mayorkas’ waivers. These laws include those related to environmental, historical, and cultural preservation.
According to Newsweek, President Biden has deflected responsibility for this decision, stating that the money was appropriated for the border wall and he tried to redirect it, but was unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, Mayorkas issued a statement insisting that nothing fundamental had changed with the announcement, emphasizing that the Biden administration has always been clear that a border wall is not the answer.
Ocasio-Cortez expressed her disagreement with Biden’s stance in a video for social media, where she argued that a wall would not fix the problem and that the root causes of migration need to be addressed.

The disagreement between Ocasio-Cortez and the Biden administration on this issue highlights the current situation. Ocasio-Cortez, a socialist true believer, argues that the U.S. must address the root causes of migration, while Biden, a transactional career politician, must navigate the border crisis politically.
Ultimately, Americans are the ones who lose in this intraparty argument between Democrats.

It is evident that Ocasio-Cortez’s objections to the construction of “physical barriers” along the U.S.-Mexico border go beyond just opposing Trump’s policies. Her criticism stems from a deep-rooted belief that walls do not solve immigration problems and that they perpetuate inequality between the United States and Latin American countries.
On the other hand, the Biden administration’s decision to construct these barriers showcases their pragmatic approach to addressing the immediate issue of illegal crossings in heavily impacted areas. They recognize the need for temporary solutions while working on the long-term factors that drive migration.
This infighting within the Democratic party exposes a fundamental divide between true believers and opportunists. While Ocasio-Cortez adheres to her progressive ideology, others within the party are willing to compromise and take practical steps to address the issue at hand.
It is important to note that infighting is not unique to the Democratic party. Political factions within any party often have differing views on how to achieve their common goals. However, what distinguishes the true believers from the opportunists is their unwavering commitment to their core principles.
Ocasio-Cortez’s opposition to the construction of “physical barriers” reflects her conviction that a more comprehensive approach is necessary to solve immigration issues. Her focus on addressing root causes and investing in social and economic development in Latin American countries aligns with her progressive beliefs.
On the other hand, the Biden administration’s decision to construct these barriers can be seen as a pragmatic response to the immediate crisis at the border. They recognize the need for border enforcement and deterring illegal crossings, even if it means temporarily using physical barriers.
While Ocasio-Cortez may view this as a betrayal of progressive ideals, others within the Democratic party understand the complexity of the issue and are willing to compromise in the face of practical realities.
This distinction between true believers and opportunists highlights the diversity within the Democratic party. While it may lead to public disagreements and infighting, it also fosters a healthy debate that ultimately strengthens the party and allows for a more inclusive and diverse range of perspectives.
As the Democratic party continues to navigate these internal divisions, it is important to recognize the merits of both sides of the argument. Both the idealistic vision of true believers and the pragmatic approach of opportunists have their place in shaping effective policies.
In conclusion, the infighting among Democrats regarding the construction of “physical barriers” along the U.S.-Mexico border distinguishes between true believers like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and opportunists within the party. While Ocasio-Cortez adheres to her progressive principles and opposes the use of walls, the Biden administration’s decision reflects their pragmatic response to the immediate issue of illegal crossings. This divide highlights the diversity within the Democratic party and fosters healthy debate, ultimately leading to more inclusive and effective policies.
