Another Norfolk Southern Train Derails As CEO Testifies To Congress

On Thursday, another Norfolk Southern train crashed as the CEO of the company was giving testimony to Congress on the Ohio disaster.

Company claimed that about 30 cars had been left on the Norfolk Southern train in Alabama, as it traveled from Atlanta to Mississippi.

“Norfolk Southern is responding to a derailment in Piedmont, Alabama,” The company said Make a statement. “There are no reports of injuries and no reports of a hazardous materials release. We are working in close coordination with local officials.”

Matthew Wade, Sheriff of Calhoun County said Property damage and injuries have never been reported. It is not possible to sustain an injury or property damage. He stated that dangerous material was involved.

It happened around the time that the Senate was hearing from Alan Shaw, the CEO of Norfolk Southern. Shaw also spoke to the Senate about recent derailments such as a train carrying toxic chemicals, which derailed last month in East Palestine.

Officials continue to deal with cleanup efforts at the site of the accident. The chemicals found in train cars were controlled burned and released into the atmosphere. Vinyl chloride is one such chemical. This highly inflammable compound was used to create PVC.

East Palestine residents were originally They were later allowed to return home after being evacuated. Residents are still concerned about the impact of dangerous materials on air and water quality. Some residents reported problems breathing, headaches and voice damage. The crash also caused the deaths of thousands of animals, including fish.

Senator Jeff Merkley (D.OR) asked Shaw a series of questions regarding rail safety. He encouraged Shaw to make a commitment to lobbying against safety regulations and not for them.

“Will your team lobby for safety improvements rather than against them?” Merkley questioned Shaw but he did not directly answer.

“I just really thought when you said ‘turn over a new leaf,’ I thought you were saying you were going to now support safety regulations,” Merkley stated. “I’m sorry you can’t tell this crowd here today that would like to hear that, that that is the case.”

Sen. J.D. Vance (R.OH) was a witness.

“I think that our leadership, our media, and our politicians were slow to respond to this crisis in part because a certain segment of our leadership feels like the people of East Palestine are a little out of style,” Vance stated. “They have the wrong politics, they’re a little too rural. Maybe a little too white.”
