Angie Craig alleged attacker indicted on charges of assaulting member of Congress
A man accused of attacking Representative Angie Craig from Minnesota has been indicted on charges related to the incident by a grand jury. Kendrick Hamlin, who was charged with assaulting a member of Congress, among other federal counts, allegedly attacked Craig in her Washington, D.C. apartment building last month. According to reports, the attack was not politically motivated.
Craig was assaulted in an elevator as she was leaving the apartment building at around 7:15 a.m. on 8th February. She reported the incident to the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia, leading to Hamlin’s arrest later that evening on charges of simple assault.
The suspect was seen acting erratically in the apartment building’s lobby before the attack. The police report stated that the suspect began to do push-ups randomly in the elevator. Craig sustained some bruising but was otherwise unharmed after throwing a cup of hot coffee at the suspect before escaping the elevator.
Hamlin has requested his release from pretrial detention and is set to appear before the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in April.
The attack raised concerns of increased violence towards members of Congress as the U.S. Capitol Police recorded more than 9,000 threats against lawmakers in 2022. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger previously described the threat climate as intolerant, hateful and violent.
