Andrew Cuomo denies being Trump’s choice for New York mayor

Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo dismissed the notion that he is President Donald Trump’s preferred candidate in New York’s mayoral race.

On Monday, Cuomo appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box to respond to a New York Times report that White House advisers are considering a position for incumbent Mayor Eric Adams in the Trump administration.

“I don’t even know what that means,” Cuomo said of the report. “I know that you have an alliance between President Trump and Eric Adams. Eric Adams would, frankly, be in jail but for President Trump.”

“Mamdani says that you are President Trump’s choice,” CNBC anchor Rebecca Quick interjected.

“Yeah, except that’s ludicrous, right?” Cuomo said. “If you’re a Republican, you are praying for Mamdani to win. If Mamdani wins, they can use that against the Democrats all across the country. Mamdani wins, they’ll say the Democratic Party has been taken over by socialists.

“I think you do have a President Trump-Adams alliance. The president, literally, as I said, Adams would be in jail, in my opinion, but for President Trump. If President Trump can give him a job and a graceful exit, and if he could get him confirmed, I think he would do that just on a personal level.”

Republican candidate Curtis Silwa also dismissed the report, calling to “stop this nonsensical talk about who’s dropping out of the race and instead focus on what matters: protecting New Yorkers.” Silwa said he has not been offered a position with the Trump administration.

Trump acknowledged to reporters on Thursday that he “would like to see two people drop out and have it be one-on-one,” because “that’s a race that could be won.”
