In an interview Tuesday, political analyst Darrell West of the Brookings Institution said that Wyoming is “tough ground” for Republicans who do not support former President Trump.

His remarks came after Republican Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) announced that she is debating on whether to run for president herself.

While West said he supports her, he admits Cheney running would “still be an uphill battle.”

“Her loss means Trump still controls the Republican party,” West stated. “I mean, he has a 70 to 80 percent approval rating among Republicans. So, in primaries, it’s very hard for someone hostile to Trump to do well, given the strong support that people have for the former president. He is still dominating the agenda. He dominates the news coverage. And most Republicans like what he’s doing. They have not abandoned him.”

Cheney has an antagonistic relationship with Trump. She served on the January 6 Committee and had voted to impeach him during his first term.
