America’s Banana Republic Era Is Here: Manhattan Grand Jury Votes To Indict Trump

Former President Donald Trump is facing indictment after a Manhattan grand jury voted in favor of charging him. This is the culmination of the Democrats’ long-standing campaign to bring down the former President.

Instead of working towards keeping the streets of New York City safe from violent criminals, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg recently decided to go after Donald Trump for using his personal lawyer to pay $130,000 to adult film star Stormy Daniels just before the 2016 election. The charges have yet to be announced, but if Bragg has his way, Trump could face jail time over a case that the Department of Justice, Bragg’s predecessor, and the Federal Election Commission had originally chosen not to pursue.

The decision to indict Trump is deeply troubling as it may further encourage political prosecutions in the US. This politicization of justice could lead to partisan operations against Republicans while Democrats get a free pass.

Trump had predicted his arrest two weeks before the grand jury officially announced the indictment. He denounced the charges, calling them “political persecution” and “election interference.”

Legal scholars and pundits suggest that the charge against Trump would only be a misdemeanor that carries no serious punishment, except for fines. However, Bragg pursued felony charges against Trump for falsifying business records to conceal federal campaign finance violations. This type of felony carries a five-year statute of limitations, but Bragg is likely to circumvent it.
