America’s 250th becomes latest front in country’s political divide
The 250th anniversary of America’s independence has become a contentious political issue, rather than a unifying party. While originally intended as a moment of national pride, it has been marred by partisan disputes over its meaning and the role of political figures like President Donald Trump. Trump has prominently associated himself with the events, hosting rallies and integrating his own celebrations with patriotic festivities, which critics say politicizes the milestone. The White House asserts that these events honor the nation’s history, not politics, but disagreements over planning have surfaced, including the creation of competing committees-one established by Congress and another by Trump-highlighting political divides. supporters view Trump’s involvement as a celebration of American patriotism, while opponents see it as an opportunity for political spectacle. The anniversary has thus become a symbol of broader ideological conflicts over national identity and tradition.
America’s 250th birthday was supposed to be a national celebration. Instead, it’s becoming another front in America’s political wars.
Two and a half centuries after America declared its independence from Great Britain, the nation’s 250th birthday was expected to be a moment of national unity. Yet the reality is that Democrats and Republicans are fighting over what the event represents and whether the White House has politicized the celebration.

Democrats say President Donald Trump has made himself the centerpiece of the festivities, pointing to Wednesday’s rally kicking off the Great American State Fair on the National Mall. While warming the crowd for the rally, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy even used the term “libtard” to slam performers who pulled out of the event saying it was politicized.
“As Americans come together to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, Donald Trump is doing what he does best: blowing money on flashy, Trump-themed events while forcing Americans to foot the bill,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin told the Washington Examiner.
Critics also point to Trump’s decision to blend his own birthday celebration with an America 250-themed UFC event at the White House, saying it further placed the president at the center of the anniversary. Nor is Trump’s starring role ending anytime soon.
In the next 10 days, Trump will headline three Freedom 250 events, including the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in South Dakota, a massive fireworks launch at Mt. Rushmore, and a July 4 celebration on the National Mall.
The White House rejects that characterization, arguing the events are meant to celebrate the country’s history rather than advance a political message. As president, Trump’s role is to preside over the ceremonies honoring the country’s birthday.
“From the Great American State Fair and Salute to America Celebration to the Patriot Games, Rededicate 250, and many other inspiring events, 2026 will deliver a powerful resurgence of patriotism and national pride under President Trump’s leadership,” White House spokesman Davis Ingle told the Washington Examiner.
Former Republican National Committee communications director Doug Heye said Trump’s prominent role reflects his governing style more than a departure from it.
Trump “won’t regret” making America’s 250th about himself because he is his own “favorite thing,” Heye told the Washington Examiner.
The political divide extends beyond competing rhetoric. It has also played out in the organizations responsible for planning the anniversary itself.
Congress created the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, better known as America 250, in 2016 to coordinate the nationwide celebration. But after disputes over the commission’s leadership, Trump established a separate Freedom 250 initiative through executive order and a White House task force.
“America 250 for 10 years had been working on this, but wasn’t planning to do anything, especially now that Trump is president and he indicated he wanted to be involved,” a source familiar with the matter told the Washington Examiner. “The nation deserves a celebration.”

Both groups have been the recipients of private donations that they do not have to disclose, but Freedom 250 has received millions of dollars of funding congressionally appropriated for America 250 and promoted Trump administration priorities through educational materials and its “Freedom Trucks” initiative.
Supporters of the White House effort argue the administration simply stepped in to ensure the country’s 250th birthday received the celebration it deserved. Critics counter that the emergence of two competing organizations has itself become emblematic of a broader political struggle over who gets to define America’s 250th anniversary and what message it should send.
