The Democratic mayor of Dallas is making a bold move by becoming a Republican, as he believes the “future of America’s great urban centers” depends on leaders who prioritize law and order and practice fiscal conservatism.
In a captivating Wall Street Journal op-ed, Mayor Eric Johnson announced his party affiliation change and expressed his belief that Republican policies are what cities truly need.
“American cities need Republicans—and Republicans need American cities,” stated Johnson, who secured an overwhelming 98 percent of the vote in his recent reelection.
He pointed out Democrat leaders as the cause of the struggles faced by American cities.
“Regrettably, many of our cities are in disarray. Mayors and other local elected officials have failed to prioritize public safety or exercise fiscal restraint,” Johnson explained. “Most of these local leaders proudly identify as Democrats, perceiving cities as laboratories for liberalism rather than as havens for opportunity and free enterprise.”
Johnson joins a growing trend of Democrats switching party affiliations. Another Texas Democrat recently made the switch, continuing the surge of state and local officials joining the Grand Old Party this year.
Over the past two decades, approximately four times as many Democratic state lawmakers have switched to the Republican Party compared to the opposite scenario.
