Amazon to lay off 9,000 in wave of job cuts

Amazon is set to lay off an additional 9,000 employees from its workforce due to the post-pandemic adjustments in the tech industry. This follows 18,000 jobs that were previously announced in January. Amazon CEO, Andy Jassy, announced the new job cuts on Monday, which will affect various departments such as advertising, Amazon Web Services, Twitch live-streaming service, as well as the People Experience and Technology Solutions team.

In a memo about the layoffs, Jassy explained that previous years saw a significant increase in headcount, which has now become inefficient, given the current economic uncertainty. The company plans to be more streamlined in its costs and headcount at present, hence the decision to cut jobs.

The January announcement did not include the latest layoffs due to incomplete analyses, as some teams were not yet finished with their assessments by fall. Amazon, therefore, chose to announce these cuts once the appropriate diligence was completed.

In recent weeks, Facebook parent company Meta has also announced its plan to lay off 10,000 workers as it pursues its “year of efficiency.” Amazon and Meta aren’t the only ones adjusting to the post-pandemic world; other companies across various industries are also streamlining their costs and headcount as they strive to stay competitive amidst economic uncertainty.
