Alyssa Milano Talks Lingering COVID Symptoms In Vaccine PSA

In an effort to combat vaccine hesitancy, actress Alyssa Milano discussed her issues with lingering COVID-19 symptoms and encouraged people to get vaccinated as a preventative measure.

In a PSA from Creative Coalition, Milano said she does not know when she will feel entirely like herself again and that doctors are still figuring out the extent of lingering COVID symptoms.

“I’m not sure when I will feel like myself again, and that’s hard for me to admit. I got COVID. So many others died, and yet I’m lucky. I’m still here,” she said. “But so are my long-haul symptoms, and even the best doctors and scientists don’t know what to expect moving forward. But what they do know is that we now have a vaccine against this devastating virus. It is safe and effective. It can keep you from getting critically ill.”

“I wish this vaccine had been around before so many of us had gotten sick,” she concluded in the PSA. “But it is here now, for you. This shot means that you can be there again with family, friends, and neighbors. Be there. This is your shot.”

In August of last year, Milano was hospitalized due to her lingering COVID symptoms after experiencing heaviness in her chest. She has also suffered hair loss as a result of her symptoms.

“I was acutely sick w/ Covid19 in April. I still have many symptoms,” she said at the time. “I am what they call a ‘long hauler.’ Last night, I had real heaviness in my chest. I went to the ER just to make sure it wasn’t a blood clot. Thankfully, it wasn’t. This virus sucks. Please take it seriously.”

In a lengthier post on Instagram, Milano posted a photo of herself in the hospital during her fight with COVID-19, saying how it felt like an “elephant was sitting” on her chest.

“This was me on April 2nd after being sick for 2 weeks. I had never been this kind of sick. Everything hurt. Loss of smell. It felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest,” she said. “I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t keep food in me. I lost 9 pounds in 2 weeks. I was confused. Low-grade fever. And the headaches were horrible. I basically had every Covid symptom. At the very end of March, I took two covid19 tests and both were negative. I also took a covid antibody test (the finger prick test) after I was feeling a bit better. NEGATIVE.”

“After living the last 4 months with lingering symptoms like, vertigo, stomach abnormalities, irregular periods, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, zero short term memory, and general malaise, I went and got an antibody test from a blood draw (not the finger prick) from a lab,” she continued. “I am POSITIVE for covid antibodies. I had Covid19. I just want you to be aware that our testing system is flawed and we don’t know the real numbers. I also want you to know, this illness is not a hoax. I thought I was dying. It felt like I was dying. I will be donating my plasma with hopes that I might save a life. Please take care of yourselves. Please wash your hands and wear a mask and social distance. I don’t want anyone to feel the way I felt.”
