Almost 50% Of Republicans Think The Wrong Verdict Was Reached In Derek Chauvin Trial: Poll

Forty-six percent of Republicans believe that the jury reached the wrong verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial, according to a new CBS News poll.

“Three in four Americans think the jury reached the right verdict in which former police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder in the death of George Floyd, a majority view that spans across all racial, age and partisan groups,” reported CBS News.

Categorized by race, 70% of white Americans and 93% of black Americans believe the right verdict was reached, with 30% of white Americans and 7% of black Americans believing the wrong verdict was reached.

When categorized by political party, 90% of Democrats believe that the right verdict was reached, while 10% of Democrats believe the wrong verdict was reached. This changes slightly when it comes to independents, with 75% believing the right verdict was reached and 25% believing the wrong verdict was reached.

When it comes to Republicans, however, it is far more evenly split, with 54% of Republicans believing the right verdict was reached, and 46% believing the wrong verdict was reached.

“The smaller portion of Americans — 25% —  who believe the jury reached the wrong verdict strongly disagree with the ideas of the Black Lives Matter movement. This group is composed of more men than women, is disproportionately White and they mostly identify as conservative,” added CBS News.

Included in the poll was a question on the “job your local police are doing.” 33% of Americans believe the police are doing a “very good” job, while 46% think the police are doing a “somewhat good” job. Twenty-one percent think that the police are doing a “somewhat/very bad” job.

When categorized by race, 39% of white Americans believe the police are doing a “very good” job, 43% believe the police are doing a “somewhat good” job, and 18% believe the police are doing a “somewhat/very bad” job. Seventeen percent of black Americans believe the police are doing a “very good” job, 53% believe the police are doing a “somewhat good” job, and 30% believe the police are doing a “somewhat/very bad” job.

On balance, Black Americans rate their local police more positively than negatively, but they (17%) are less likely than Whites (39%) to say their local police are doing a ‘very good’ job in their community,” CBS News added.

When we look at the original data, 11% of white Americans believe the police are doing a “somewhat bad” job, compared to 19% of black Americans and 16% of Hispanic Americans. Seven percent of white Americans believe the police are doing a “very bad” job, compared to 11% of black Americans and 6% of Hispanic Americans.

If we group consistently by “very/somewhat good,” 82% of white Americans approve of the job their local police doing (while 18% disapprove), compared to 70% of black Americans (30% disapprove) and 77% of Hispanic Americans (22% disapprove).
