Alex Murdaugh appeals conviction and sentencing in murder of wife and son

Murdaugh was convicted on two murder charges just one week before the appeal. He was sentenced to two life sentences by Circuit Judge without parole the day after. Clifton Newman. Newman dismissed the motion of Murdaugh’s lawyers to declare a mistrial immediately after the verdict.

Prosecutors claimed Murdaugh murdered Maggie and one of their sons Paul on their Islandton property, South Carolina on June 7, 2021. According to prosecutors, the motive was for Murdaugh to be distracted from financial crime investigations. These alleged crimes include stealing millions from former clients.

Murdaugh claims he did not murder his wife or son. But he also admitted lying to investigators about the location of his body on the night of the murder, as well as stealing money from clients.
