AFT President Randi Weingarten Posts “We Stand With Ukraine” Photo With Upside Down Ukrainian Flag
American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and Executive Vice President Evelyn DeJesus posed with a Ukrainian flag poster emblazoned with the words “We stand with Ukraine,” and an AFL-CIO logo. The only problem is the flag was printed upside down.
Ukraine’s flag has blue on top, and yellow at the bottom, representing the sky and wheat. The country is known as Europe’s bread basket. The flag symbolizes a blue sky over a field of wheat.
This was a major clout fail for the union heads, who represent some 12.5 million American educators. Many found it hard to believe that Weingarten, DeJesus, and the AFT itself could possibly be involved in the educations of millions of American school children when they couldn’t even print a foreign flag for a country they allegedly “stand with” correctly.
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) posted to the photo to their Twitter account, showing that at no step of the production process, from design through printing to posting, did anyone at the AFT take a look and realize they were making a literal false flag.
Despite many across social media pointing to the obvious mistake, the AFT did not issue a correction, or take it down. DeJesus’ Twitter profile has an “I Stand with Ukraine” logo, which was correct, with blue above and yellow below. Oddly, she did not appear to notice the discrepancy.
“When you’re in such a rush for social clout you get the flag upside-down,” John Cooper said, communications director at Heritage Foundation.
The obvious metaphor for America’s failing schools was plain to see.
School choice advocate Corey DeAngelis, who believes parents should be able to apply their education tax dollars to whatever school they choose, noted that this was a clear advertisement for his cause.
According to ATF’s website, “The American Federation of Teachers is a union of professionals that champions fairness; democracy; economic opportunity; and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for our students, their families and our communities. We are committed to advancing these principles through community engagement, organizing, collective bargaining and political activism, and especially through the work our members do.”
They apparently are not versed in foreign flags, or even how to do a quick search on the internet.
Later, it appears that a correction to the posters was made, with the posters reversed, and the words pasted over in the correct position.
