Activists plot to exclude Trump from key states’ ballots with clever tactic.
Left-Leaning Groups Launch Campaign to Keep Trump Off Ballot in Key States
In a surprising move, two left-leaning groups have initiated a campaign to prevent former President Donald Trump from appearing on the ballot in at least five crucial states in the 2024 election. This bold effort clearly indicates their concern about Trump’s potential electability in these states, namely California, Colorado, Georgia, Oregon, and Nevada.
Although all five states voted for President Biden in 2020, it is worth noting that Nevada and Georgia had narrow margins, with Biden winning by only 2.4 percent and 0.3 points, respectively. While excluding Trump’s name from the ballot in these states could have some impact, it seems unlikely to alter the results in California, Colorado, or Oregon, where Biden secured significant leads of 29.2, 13.5, and 16.1 points, respectively.
Even if Trump had won both Georgia and Nevada, he would have fallen short of the Electoral College votes needed for victory by 28 votes. Therefore, the rationale behind this campaign remains questionable.
The two groups, Mi Familia Vota and Free Speech for People, have commenced a week of rallies outside the offices of the secretaries of state in California, Colorado, Georgia, and Oregon, as reported by The Hill. It is unclear why no events were planned in Nevada, although the groups had previously corresponded with Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar on the same matter.
The groups argue that the 14th Amendment grants each state’s secretary of state the authority to disqualify Trump from running for office due to his involvement in the Jan. 6 incursion at the Capitol. However, it is worth noting that the events of that day are still under investigation, and it remains uncertain whether they meet the criteria of an “insurrection or rebellion against the United States.”
Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, known as the Insurrectionist Disqualification Clause, is being cited by the groups. It states that no person who has engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States shall hold any office, civil or military, under the United States or any state. However, it does not explicitly mention the presidency. The Congressional Research Service has previously indicated that Section 3 may not bar Trump from holding the office again.
Despite these uncertainties, the groups are determined to proceed with their joint effort, aptly named “Trump is Disqualified.” They have scheduled their week of rallies to coincide with the 155th anniversary of the ratification of the 14th Amendment in 1868.
“Trump is responsible for the January 6th insurrection, plain and simple,” stated Alexandra Flores-Quilty, campaign director for Free Speech For People. “Failing to hold him responsible not only violates the Constitution, but it also sets a dangerous precedent for permitting violent attacks on our democracy. That’s not a risk we can afford to take.”
While the groups are focused on Nevada, California, Oregon, Colorado, and Georgia, it remains unclear how successful their campaign will be in influencing the 2024 election. Héctor Sánchez, executive director of Mi Familia Vota, expressed confidence in their discussions with secretaries of state, but did not provide specific details on the expected impact.
Only time will tell if these efforts will have any significant effect on Trump’s political future.
