Abdul el Sayed responds to Trump’s criticism: ‘The man can’t stay on focus’

After el Sayed won the Tuesday Michigan Senate primary, Trump and the Republicans have turned their sights against the progressive Democrat, with Trump unleashing on him in a Wednesday speech. Responding to Trump’s many criticisms in an interview with CNN, el Sayed began by sarcastically thanking the president for calling him a “lovely gentleman.”

“This is the response that they have,” he said. “First, look at the background: It says no tax on tips. The man can’t stay on focus. That’s like the one thing that he did to offer any economic relief. But instead of that, he’s more focused on me and what I’m going to do while we’re living through an affordability crisis that is generational.”
“People are paying nearly $5 in gas because of a war he started, and half the time, if he’s not talking about me, he’s talking about the drapes in his ballroom,” Sayed continued. “So, at the end of the day, I invite the president to focus on what I’m saying. I want to get money out of politics, put money in your pocket, and pass Medicare for all.”
Trump laid into his attacks against Sayed in a speech at Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas on Wednesday, describing him as a communist.
“When I watch Abdul, he’s full of s***,” the president said. “What they’re trying to do, in fact, they want to skip socialism. They want to go right down to the bottom of the barrel. That’s communism. They want it to be a communist country. We’re not letting them have it as a communist country, not even for a minute, not even for a minute.”
Aiming at a key sensitivity of Democrats that partially defined the Democratic Senate primary, he then accused el Sayed of antisemitism in harsh terms.

“This guy hates Jews. Somebody said, ‘Oh, that’s a little strong.’ No, he hates Jews, and he hates Israel. Abdul el Sayed,” Trump said. “He doesn’t love Israel. He doesn’t love Jewish people. He hates them. He hates them with a passion that burns in his heart, and there’s not a fricking thing he can do about it.”
As Trump pointed out, el Sayed defeated the establishment-backed Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) by a narrower margin than anticipated, something Republicans hope indicates decreased Democratic enthusiasm for the new candidate heavily favored by the Democratic Socialists of America.
