A Jail Official Helped An Inmate Escape. People Are Lining Up To Stay In The Motel Room They Used.

An Alabama corrections officer and the inmate she allegedly helped free from jail reserved a motel room in Indiana, during his escape. Now that the former is dead and the latter is captured, people are lining up to stay in the room.

As The Daily Wire previously reported, former Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office Assistant Director of Corrections Vicky White’s escape plan for Casey White — who was jailed after confessing to fatally stabbing a woman in 2015 — was “well thought out,” and they were thought to be armed. On May 9, authorities in Indiana captured them after a pursuit that ended in a crash. Vicky White — who was not related to Casey White — later died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

The pair — who garnered national media attention for their escape — made a 14-day reservation at a Motel 41 in Evansville, Indiana. Today, “at least 70 people” and “possibly more” are on a waitlist to stay in their room, WAAYTV reported on Monday. A clerk who wished to remain anonymous told the outlet that the room is presently going for $75 to $100 per night — slightly higher than the regular nightly rate of $63.

“The clerk said on Sunday alone, the motel took 25 calls from people interested in staying in the room Casey and Vicky were hiding out in,” WAAYTV continued. “Someone stayed in the room Sunday night… According to the clerk, motel workers removed the room number sign after someone tried to take it.”

Indeed, Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton characterized the relationship between Vicky White and Casey White as a “jailhouse romance.”

Vicky White disappeared on April 29 while claiming to escort Casey White to a mental health evaluation. However, Singleton said that moving an inmate alone is not permitted. “Our policy is for any inmate with those kinds of charges to have two sworn deputies escort them. And that did not happen,” he told the press.

Casey White was also not scheduled for a mental health evaluation. Nevertheless, Vicky White told colleagues that she had been scheduled for a doctor’s appointment of her own, to which she never showed.

At first, investigators were not certain whether Vicky White — who had been voted employee of the year multiple times and was respected in the office — helped the inmate escape or whether she had been kidnapped. Indeed, Casey White had made a shank in 2020 and threatened to escape with a hostage. However, authorities soon determined that there was a “special relationship” between the pair.

Singleton noted that Vicky White sold her house for $95,550 — far below its market value of $235,600 — on April 18. District Attorney Chris Connolly told ABC News that Vicky White withdrew approximately $90,000 from several banks before April 29.

Vicky White’s mother-in-law, Frances White, told The Daily Beast that the official had amassed large sums of money over time to keep herself afloat and “may have been brainwashed” into freeing Casey White. “She had said that she’d like to live in Florida, that’s the
