Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced on Tuesday that his office has opened investigations into 33 possible noncitizens who allegedly committed voter fraud in the 2024 election.
“Noncitizens must not be allowed to influence American elections, and I will use the full weight of my office to investigate all voter fraud,” Paxton said in a press release.
The announcement came after Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson referred the cases to the Republican attorney general’s office.
“In order to be able to trust the integrity of our elections, the results must be determined by our own citizens—not foreign nationals breaking the law to illegally vote,” Paxton added. “These potential instances of unlawful voting will be thoroughly investigated, and I will continue to stand with President Trump in fighting to ensure that our state’s elections are safe and secure.”
Earlier this year, Texas obtained access to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service’s Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements database. The online system verifies immigration status and naturalized U.S. citizenship information about individuals applying for benefits or licenses.
Committed to election integrity, President Donald Trump signed an executive order in March directing the Department of Homeland Security to provide all states with free access to the SAVE database.
Texas has been trying to gain access to the federal database for over a year.
“For years, states have pleaded for tools to help identify and stop aliens from hijacking our elections,” USCIS spokesman Matthew Tragesser said last month. “Under the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Noem, USCIS is moving quickly to eliminate voter fraud. We expect further improvements soon and remain committed to restoring trust in American elections.”

The Lone Star State has been at the forefront of the election integrity issue, with Republican Gov. Greg Abbott announcing last year that over 6,500 noncitizens had been removed from voter rolls since he signed a voting bill in 2021. Federal law prohibits foreign nationals from voting in federal, state, or local elections, but Trump and Republicans argue the law has not been upheld in this area.
Texas has also cracked down on election fraud committed by public officials. Paxton recently announced the arrests and indictments of six individuals who participated in an illegal vote harvesting scheme in Frio County. Among those implicated in the scheme were a county judge and two city council members.
