Most DC residents want proposed Commanders stadium as council teeters

A majority of Washington, D.C., residents support the proposal for a new Washington Commanders stadium to replace the former RFK Stadium on the banks of the Anacostia River.

The Commanders and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the $3.7 billion deal last week, which would build the stadium, housing, shops, parks, and recreational sports facilities. The Commanders would pay $2.7 billion for vertical construction, while the district would pay $500 million for horizontal construction and $181 million for parking.

When asked whether they would favor or oppose using district funds to support the project, a Washington Post-Schnar School poll of 651 D.C. residents found that 55% support the plan compared to 39% who oppose it.

The proposed stadium and surrounding development would be in Ward 7. Among those polled in Wards 7 and 8, 63% of residents said they favor the deal compared to only 34% who said they oppose it. Residents east of the Anacostia River support the plan by the widest margin of any region, 74%-25%.

Among all the wards, support is over 50% in the poll, except in Wards 3 and 4, where more people oppose the plan than support it, 49%-46%. Wards 3 and 4 include several of the district’s wealthier neighborhoods in northwestern D.C., far from the stadium.

Bowser, a strong supporter of the stadium deal, touted the poll’s results in a post on X, pointing out the figures in areas closest to the proposed new stadium.

“DC is ready to welcome the @Commanders home—across the city, but especially in Wards 7 and 8 and East of the River,” Bowser said. “The deal with the Commanders is a win-win-win: for the team, for the fans, and for DC.”

TRUMP CLAIMS 2027 NFL DRAFT AS A WIN IN MISSION TO MAKE DC ‘SAFE’ AND ‘BEAUTIFUL’

Bowser still has to convince the Council of the District of Columbia to pass legislation approving the deal, with a fast-approaching July 15 deadline. The council would need seven “yes” votes to pass the bill. So far, four members have said they would support the deal, and three appear to be leaning toward opposing it. The remaining members are unclear on their position.

A week after the stadium deal was announced, Bowser, Commanders Owner Josh Harris, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and President Donald Trump announced the 2027 NFL Draft would be hosted on the National Mall in Washington.
