A Congressional District Christmas Party in Detroit Turns Violent
A Congressional district Christmas party in Detroit turned violent Saturday night when anti-Israel protesters crashed the event and got into a shoving match with the attendees.
Video of the incident posted by The Midwesterner showed a group of anti-Israel protesters getting into a shoving and shouting match with partygoers while calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. Democratic Rep. Shri Thanedar was at the party and attempted to give a speech when the violence broke out.
Thanedar is the U.S. congressman for Michigan’s 13th District and has been one of the strongest supporters of Israel in the Democratic Party following Hamas’ brutal terrorist attack on the country on October 7. After the congressman got up to speak at the party, the anti-Israel protesters began shouting over a bullhorn, The Midwesterner reported.
“Shri, do you believe in a free Palestine?” one woman shouted.
“Hey, Shri, you can’t hide. We charge you with genocide,” a group of protesters then chanted.
The protest reportedly turned violent when the anti-Israel demonstrators refused to leave the venue after they were asked. One woman who was at the party shared a live video on social media during the altercation, saying she was punched by a protester and showing her bloodied face.
“It’s the 13th District Democratic Party and the Arabs are coming! They tried to kill me!” she said. “And they’re talking about ceasefire and they tried to kill me!”
“Them Arabs in motherf***in’ Detroit tried to kill me!” the woman added. “I need you, black men, to stand the f*** up.”

On Monday, Thanedar addressed the protesters and invited them to come speak to him at his office.
“This is not going to give you support for your cause,” he said. “I welcome them to come to my office. I welcome them to invite me to town halls where I could come and we can have a dialogue.”
The Detroit Police Department is investigating the incident and said it hasn’t made any arrests, according to ABC 7.
The Democratic congressman said he was targeted again by anti-Israel protesters who showed up outside his home at 3 a.m. Sunday, blaring car horns and shouting, “You are complicit in the bombing of Gaza. … Your silence is violence. Your silence is abhorrent, and we will not let you sleep!”

How did Democratic Rep. Shri Thanedar respond to the anti-Israel protesters’ disruption at the party?

It is disheartening to witness the escalation of violence at a Christmas party meant to bring people together. Such incidents highlight the deeply entrenched divisions and tensions that exist in our society. The clash between anti-Israel protesters and party attendees not only disrupted the event but also resulted in physical confrontations and injuries.
As a representative for Michigan’s 13th District, Democratic Rep. Shri Thanedar was present at the party and found himself caught in the middle of the chaos. Thanedar has been a strong advocate for Israel and has condemned Hamas’ acts of terrorism. However, this incident demonstrates that political disagreements can quickly spiral out of control, leading to physical altercations and endangering the safety of those present.
While it is crucial to maintain the right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression, it is equally important to uphold the principles of respect, dialogue, and understanding. Engaging in violent behavior and resorting to personal attacks undermines the very essence of constructive dialogue and only serves to further polarize society.
In the aftermath of this unfortunate event, it is essential for the concerned parties to address the underlying issues that led to such violence. Open and honest conversations regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict can contribute to greater understanding and empathy among individuals with differing views. It is through peaceful and respectful exchanges that we can strive for positive change and work towards a more inclusive and harmonious society.
It is incumbent upon all individuals, regardless of their political leanings, to condemn violence and promote dialogue as a means of resolving conflicts. It is only through constructive engagement and empathy that we can strive to bridge the divides that exist within our communities.
We must remember the true spirit of the holiday season, which is one of unity, compassion, and goodwill towards all. It is my hope that incidents like this will serve as a wake-up call for us to reflect on the importance of maintaining peace, respect, and understanding in our interactions with one another. Let us use this incident as an opportunity for growth and strive to build a society where differences are embraced and resolved through peaceful means.
