Rep. Jamaal Bowman to Face Charges for False Fire Alarm
Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D., N.Y.) is set to face a misdemeanor charge for falsely pulling a fire alarm in a House office building on Sept. 30.
“On October 26, 2023, the defendant will appear in response to a judicial summons before this Court to answer criminal charges presented by the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia,” reads a booking order from the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
Bowman has agreed to plead guilty to the charge and will pay a $1,000 fine, Axios reported.
“I am responsible for activating a fire alarm, I will be paying the fine issued, and look forward to these charges being ultimately dropped,” Bowman said in a statement.
Bowman last month denied allegations that he pulled the alarm to intentionally stop a vote on a funding bill, claiming he erroneously thought that pulling the alarm would open a door.
An email of talking points his office sent to other Democrats in his defense contained a list of talking points, one of which asserted that “Republicans need to instead focus their energy on the Nazi members of their party before anything else.” Bowman later disavowed that statement and claimed he had no knowledge of it.
Bowman’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
