Angry Hillary Clinton wrote to SNL creator over daughter’s impersonation.
Former SNL Actress Julia Sweeney Reveals Hillary Clinton’s Objection to Her Portrayal of Chelsea Clinton
Former Saturday Night Live actress Julia Sweeney recently shared an interesting anecdote about her time on the show. During an appearance on the “Fly on the Wall” podcast hosted by SNL alums David Spade and Dana Carvey, Sweeney discussed the lack of female representation on the show in the early ’90s. The conversation turned to Sweeney’s portrayal of Chelsea Clinton, which apparently didn’t sit well with then-first lady Hillary Clinton.
Sweeney revealed that Hillary Clinton had written a letter to SNL creator Lorne Michaels expressing her disapproval of the portrayal. The characterization of Chelsea, who was a teenager at the time, seemed to have “rubbed somebody wrong,” as Spade put it. Sweeney confirmed that it was indeed Hillary Clinton who took issue with her portrayal.
According to Sweeney, people criticized her for playing Chelsea unattractively, even though all she did was forgo makeup, wear braces, and don a wig. Sweeney emphasized that she wasn’t intentionally trying to make Chelsea look unattractive. However, she now understands Clinton’s perspective, especially now that she is a parent herself.
“Yeah, Hillary,” Sweeney replied when asked about the letter.
Chelsea Clinton has also spoken about her experience being the subject of jokes during her younger years. She expressed her surprise that a group of adults, including professional comedians, would find it acceptable to make fun of children. SNL even targeted her again in a sketch where she was compared unfavorably to Al Gore’s daughters.
It’s worth noting that SNL later apologized to the Clinton family for any hurt caused by their sketches. Lorne Michaels acknowledged that Chelsea was just a kid who didn’t choose to be in the public eye.
Overall, Sweeney’s revelation sheds light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics of SNL and the impact of political figures on the show’s content.
