Chris Christie joins 2024 rivals in criticizing Vivek Ramaswamy’s foreign policy.
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie Slams Rival’s Foreign Policy Expertise
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie joined at least two other fellow Republican presidential candidates in attacking Vivek Ramaswamy’s foreign policy expertise this week.
During a Fox News appearance on Tuesday, Christie criticized Ramaswamy’s previous comments on the United States defending Taiwan until 2028, which he later amended. Christie argued that the U.S. should defend the nation until achieving semiconductor independence and then reevaluate, a departure from Republican ideology.
Christie’s Strong Stance on Taiwan
“When it comes to Taiwan, the foreign policy starts in Ukraine, where we send a very clear message through our unlimited support of the Ukrainian efforts to defeat the Russians and send a clear message to China that we are not going to cut and run,” Christie told Fox News. “We’re not going to do what Joe Biden did in Afghanistan. We’re not going to abandon our friends and leave them on the battlefield. That’s going to send a very clear message to China, that if they tried to make any aggressive moves towards Taiwan, the juice will not be worth the squeeze for them in a Christie administration.”
Ramaswamy has also expressed his opposition to the U.S. policy of “strategic ambiguity” when it comes to Taiwan, a stance that Christie strongly criticized during his interview.
“There’s nothing ambiguous about Vivek’s position on this. He is going to give Taiwan to the Chinese in 2028,” Christie continued. “So he’s right. He’s getting rid of ambiguity, but his ambiguity is to give Taiwan away to the Chinese. That’s not what I want to do. That’s not what I think is right for America or for the rest of the world.”
Christie took to Twitter to reiterate his stance and directly call out Ramaswamy:
“Let’s be clear: @VivekGRamaswamy’s foreign policy is to run and hide. He would give Taiwan to China. In a Christie administration, we will not cut and run. We don’t abandon our allies,” he wrote.
Christie is not alone in his criticism of Ramaswamy. Former Vice President Mike Pence and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley have also slammed Ramaswamy this week.
Pence, during a call with reporters, linked Ramaswamy to former President Barack Obama and criticized his foreign policy:
“I believe that Vivek’s foreign policy echoes the Obama doctrine of appeasement to the world’s most ruthless regimes of Russia and China and Iran,” Pence said.
Haley, on the other hand, called out Ramaswamy for his stance on funding for Israel:
“.@VivekGRamaswamy’s attacks & desperate attempts at damage control don’t change how he treats our friend Israel & how his dangerous policies make America less safe. Israel faces genocidal threats from Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, & Syria,” she posted. “Our next president must understand that. Vivek said we should abandon Israel after 2028. Those are HIS words.”
Ramaswamy’s rising popularity in the national primary polls has prompted more attacks from his rivals. However, these attacks have also forced him to clarify his ideology and defend his foreign policy stances.
As the attacks intensify, Ramaswamy may need to offer more substantive defenses regarding his foreign policy ideology to counter his opponents’ criticisms.
