Georgia prosecutors reportedly link Trump lawyers to voting system breach.
Members of Trump’s Legal Team Linked to Voting Breach in Georgia
According to emails and text messages obtained by Atlanta-area prosecutors, members of former President Donald Trump’s legal team were connected to a voting breach in Coffee County, Georgia, following the 2020 presidential election. This evidence, collected since January 2021, suggests that Trump’s team led the effort in the county, contradicting the possibility of non-affiliated supporters being responsible.
Effort to Gather Data and Back Claims of Fraud
The breach in Georgia was part of a larger effort to gather data supporting claims of fraud in the 2020 election, which Trump lost to now-President Joe Biden. The correspondences reveal discussions about accessing the voting software just days before the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
Access to the voting software was reportedly granted to Trump’s team about a week after Misty Hampton, a local elections official, sent a “written invitation” to the attorneys. This invitation was shared within Trump’s orbit, including attorneys working with Rudy Guiliani, Katherine Friess, Sidney Powell, and others. Members of Sullivan Strickler, a firm hired by Trump’s attorneys to investigate the county’s voting systems, were also recipients of the invitation.
In subsequent texts, Friess confirmed that the former president’s team had obtained written permission to breach the system. The texts also appeared to further link Guiliani to the Georgia case, with a Sullivan Strickler employee mentioning their return to DC with the mayor and the exciting developments.
Grand Jury Indictments and Trump’s Response
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is preparing to present her case before a grand jury, with charges expected to be filed in mid-August. Reports suggest that up to 12 indictments could be on the table in the investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia.
Trump’s campaign has not responded to requests for comment on these developments. However, in a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized the prosecutor, accusing her of leaking his name and questioning her focus on the record number of murders in Atlanta.
In a separate post, Trump claimed that any election interference in Fulton County was done by those who rigged and stole the election, not by him. He asserted that there is substantial and conclusive proof of fraud, which he is willing to present to the grand jury. He also criticized the district attorney and the Department of Justice, accusing them of dishonesty and attempting to keep Biden in office.
If the grand jury in Georgia indicts the former president, it would be his fourth indictment, with two previous ones brought by the federal government’s Special Counsel Jack Smith.
