RFK Jr. Super PAC: Majority of Funding Until June From GOP Mega-Donor
A super PAC backing Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has made waves with its impressive fundraising efforts. The group has reported a staggering $10 million haul through June, with half of that money coming from a single mega-donor known for supporting Republicans.
American Values 2024, the super PAC in question, has raised $9.8 million through the end of June and an additional $6 million in July alone. Since its launch in April, the group has amassed a total of around $16 million. These numbers are particularly significant as they coincide with Kennedy’s announcement of his presidential bid. POLITICO reported that out of the $9.8 million raised through June, $5 million came from American businessman and former Donald Trump supporter Timothy Mellon.
In a statement to CNBC, Mellon, who had previously donated $1.5 million to a group aligned with Trump, expressed his belief that Kennedy is the candidate who can unite the country, root out corruption, and emerge victorious in the general election.
Mellon’s support for conservative causes is well-documented. He has given $45 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, associated with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and $30 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, aligned with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). Business Insider reported that Mellon also contributed $53 million to an effort by Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott to build a border wall.
Kennedy, currently polling at 14% nationally in the Democratic primary according to the Real Clear Politics average, has positioned himself as a candidate capable of appealing to a wide range of voters. He aims to unite Democrats, Republicans, and independent voters who are disillusioned with the Washington establishment. Another major donor to the super PAC supporting Kennedy is Gavin De Becker, a consultant and close adviser to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. De Becker, who has supported candidates from both major parties in the past, has contributed $4.5 million to American Values 2024.
Kennedy’s donor base reflects a diverse mix of Democrats and Republicans, including many who have previously supported Trump and Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, according to POLITICO. The Democrat has garnered attention from Republicans due to his criticisms of the war in Ukraine and the government’s handling of COVID vaccines. Notable liberals, such as hedge fund manager Bill Ackman and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, have also voiced their support for Kennedy’s 2024 bid.
Kennedy’s fundraising efforts received a significant boost in July, with nearly $5 million raised as he testified before the House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government on July 20. During his testimony, Kennedy highlighted alleged collusion between the federal government and Big Tech corporations, claiming that they had censored his social media posts and shut down his account.
