DEA Chief Holds Social Media Firms Responsible for U.S. Fentanyl Crisis
DEA Administrator Calls for Action Against Social Media Companies
In a recent interview, DEA Administrator Anne Milgram emphasized the urgent need for Congress to pass legislation to hold social media companies accountable for their role in facilitating the sale of fentanyl on their platforms.
“Social media is what I call ‘the last mile,’” Milgram explained during her appearance on NBC News’ “Meet The Press.”
Milgram highlighted the significance of social media in the drug trade, stating, “While the southwest border is a crucial aspect of this issue, it is equally important to address the role of social media. It serves as the final link in the chain. Cartels, who are peddling the deadliest poison we’ve ever seen, rely on social media to expand their reach and sell more drugs at an alarming rate.”
When questioned about the cooperation of social media companies with law enforcement, Milgram expressed her concerns, saying, “Until recently, we have not received the level of cooperation we require.”
“We have engaged in discussions with social media companies. In April of this year, the Deputy Attorney General convened a meeting, emphasizing that these companies must adhere to their own terms of service, which explicitly prohibit the sale of illegal drugs and fake pills on their platforms,” Milgram revealed.
Furthermore, Milgram stressed the importance of law enforcement agencies having access to information from social media companies.
When asked about potential solutions, Milgram emphasized the need for action from Congress, stating, “We frequently engage in conversations with Congress regarding social media. The purchase of fake pills on these platforms is currently one of the leading causes of preventable deaths in America. If we want to save the lives of 110,000 Americans, Congress is the place to start.”
