Tennessee provides SNAP replacement benefits for food loss during severe storms.

The Tennessee Department of Human Services Offers Replacement SNAP Benefits for Storm Victims

The Tennessee Department of Human Services is taking action to support residents who have been affected by severe storm damage and are experiencing food insecurity. In response to the situation, the department has announced that it will provide replacement Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to households in need.

Assistance for SNAP Recipients

The department has stated that it is fully prepared to assist current SNAP households that have suffered losses due to severe weather conditions. This includes power outages and other household misfortunes caused by the storms.

Residents in affected areas, such as Memphis and Shelby County, are required to submit a signed affidavit to the department, confirming that they have experienced a power outage of 12 hours or more and have lost food as a result of a household issue.

To access the replacement benefits, interested recipients can visit the One DHS Customer Portal, which serves as a gateway for applying and managing various benefits, including SNAP. It is important for Tennessee residents in affected counties to request replacement benefits within 10 calendar days of experiencing food loss.

Note: Replacement SNAP benefits will be provided based on the value of the loss and will not exceed the current month’s allotment, as stated by the department in a press release.

According to data from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, over 800,000 Tennessee residents, accounting for approximately 12% of the state’s population, rely on SNAP for their nutritional needs.

The recent severe thunderstorms that swept across the Southeast, particularly affecting Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas, caused widespread power outages, hail, strong winds, and tornado threats.
