Nine People Shot in Denver During NBA Championship Celebrations

Denver, Colorado was in a celebratory mood on Monday night after the Denver Nuggets secured their first NBA championship title. However, the festivities were marred by a shooting incident that left nine people injured.

“I thought it was just more fireworks going off. The percussion kind of startled me,” said 55-year-old Scott Dangelo, a local resident who witnessed the shooting. “The police officers were dropping down on their knees. I’m live-streaming. Next thing I know the officers dive in and are pointing their weapons. They were pointing to where the shots were. A lady got shot, like, 10 feet away from me. Another person was struck. It was pretty crazy.”

According to the Denver Police Department, three of the victims were in critical condition, while the others sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect, who was also shot, is now in police custody.

Investigation Underway

Police spokesperson Doug Schepman stated that an “expansive” investigation is underway to determine what led to the altercation that resulted in the shots being fired. The incident occurred in the area where the largest gathering of people celebrating was taking place.

Schepman noted that the suspect was detained relatively easily, and the police are working to gather more information about the incident.

Celebrations Turned Chaotic

The shooting occurred in a popular part of town not far from Coor’s Field, home of the Colorado Rockies baseball team, and several popular bars. The incident turned the celebrations into chaos, with police officers diving for cover and pointing their weapons.

The Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat 94-89 on Monday night, giving the franchise its first title. However, the joy of the victory was overshadowed by the tragic incident that occurred during the celebrations.
