Pro-Life Activists Found Guilty of Blocking Access to Abortion Clinic
In a recent court ruling, five pro-life activists have been convicted for their actions in preventing women from entering a Washington abortion clinic in 2020. This landmark case has sparked controversy and could result in up to 10 years of imprisonment for the defendants.
The activists, who are members of the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU), were found guilty of violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act. This act criminalizes the use of violence, physical obstruction, or intimidation to impede access to reproductive services.

According to lawyers from The Thomas More Society, nonviolent violations of this law can result in a misdemeanor charge and up to a year in prison. However, in this case, the court deemed the defendants’ actions as a crime of “violence,” leading to their immediate incarceration.
Senior counsel Steve Crampton expressed outrage at the court’s decision, stating, “The defendants were led out of the courtroom by an army of U.S. Marshals. This is an outrage.”
The charges stem from an incident on October 22, 2020, when the activists entered the Washington Surgi-Clinic. One of the defendants, Caroline Davis, took a plea deal and testified for the government, while the remaining defendants will face trial at a later date.
In their defense, the lawyers argued that the activists did not conspire to block the clinic’s entrances. They emphasized that video evidence showed no obstruction by their clients.
Despite the passionate debate surrounding abortion, Mr. Cannon, one of the defense attorneys, urged the jury to “hold the laws close” and remain impartial.
The prosecution, however, maintained that the evidence clearly demonstrated the defendants’ guilt. Prosecuting attorney Sanjay Patel highlighted instances where force was used, such as pushing doors and nurses, to support their case.
Before the trial began, Judge Kollar-Kotelly imposed restrictions on the defense’s strategies, prohibiting certain arguments and justifications.
This case has significant implications for both pro-life and pro-choice advocates, as it raises questions about the limits of activism and the protection of reproductive rights.
