24 Republican Reps. Call On ATF To Investigate Hunter Biden For Gun-Related Felony

Two dozen Republican members of Congress on Monday sent a letter to President Joe Biden’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) nominee David Chipman, asking him, if confirmed, to investigate Hunter Biden for allegedly lying on a 4473 form, a document used to conduct background checks while purchasing a firearm.

Politico first reported that Hunter Biden answered ‘no’ to the question about drug use on the Firearms Transaction Record for a gun back in October of 2018. “Many Americans are rightfully alarmed by these reports considering Mr. Biden’s history of drug use,” the letter, first obtained by The Daily Caller, states. “In the past, the Biden family has been open about Mr. Biden’s struggle with substance abuse, and Navy records indicate his discharge from service following a positive drug test. Since lying on a background check form is a felony, this allegation merits investigation.”

Earlier this month, Hunter Biden admitted in an interview with CBS News’ Tracy Smith that he took drugs and drank vodka during the peak of his addiction, to the point where he found himself on his “hands and knees picking through rugs smoking anything that resembled crack cocaine.”

Section 21.e. of the 4473 form asks about drug use, something that would automatically disqualify Hunter from legally obtaining a firearm.

“Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance?” the form asks. “Warning: The use or possession of marijuana remains unlawful under Federal law regardless of whether it has been legalized or decriminalized for medicinal or recreational purposes in the state where you reside.”

According to the letter, a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report from 2017 found that only 12 convictions came about from the 112,000 incidents where people had lied on background check forms.

The members of Congress challenged Chipman, a known gun control activist and lobbyist, to prosecute Hunter Biden.

“Allegations of this crime are no less serious when leveled at Hunter Biden. Your career makes clear your zeal for expanding and enforcing regulations on firearms. Your work as a special agent at ATF for 25 years, which notably included working as a case agent in the Waco trial, and then going on to advise a leading gun control advocacy organization, speak for themselves,” the letter states. “The American public deserves to know that this same commitment will not be curbed depending on whether the offender is well-connected.”

Failing to provide truthful answers on a 4473 form can result in fines up to $250,000 and/or 10 years in prison.

The letter is signed by Bob Good (R-VA), Brian Babin (R-TX), Scott DesJarlais (R-TN), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Jeff Duncan (R-SC), Lauren Boebert (R-CO), Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Ted Budd (R-NC), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Andrew Clyde (R-GA), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Glenn Grothman (R-WI), Doug LaMalfa (R-CA), Andy Harris (R-MD), Marry Miller (R-IL), Yvette Herrell (R-NM), Barry Moore (R-AL), Jody Hice (R-GA), Ralph Norman (R-SC), Ronny Jackson (R-TX), Scott Perry (R-PA), Pete Sessions (R-TX), Greg Steube (R-FL), and Randy Weber (R-TX).
