2022 SI Swimsuit Finalists Include First Breast Cancer Surivor, NASA Physicist And More

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit announced its chosen 14 finalists out of thousands who applied in the magazine’s 2022 swimsuit search and winners include the first ever breast cancer survivor, a NASA physicist, and more.

The lucky winners were chosen from the magazine’s annual casting call, reported Sports Illustrated Swimsuit magazine in a recent article.

The finalists has since been invited to take part in a photo shoot and will be flown to the Dominican Republic where they will work with SI’s photographer Yu Tsai. Every finalist will appear in the 2023 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit magazine and compete to be selected as the rookie in the 2023 swimsuit issue.

Here’s the list:

Kelly Crump, a breast cancer survivor, was picked to be in the pages of the annual swimsuit issue. She was diagnosed at age 38 with cancer after discovering a lump on her chest, the magazine shared. She underwent six surgeries and 60 rounds of chemotherapy.

“I am just one of 14 amazing, strong, intelligent and awe inspiring women who were chosen this year,” Crump captioned her post on Instagram. “It was my second year applying and just think what if I just gave up the first time?”

“It is a reminder that YOU have to believe in yourself first and continue to go after your dreams even when you hit a ‘roadblock.’”

The first indigenous woman, Ashley Callingbull, from Canada’s Enoch Cree Nation, celebrated the news she was a finalist with a post on social media about breaking barriers.

“I still can’t believe this is real,” Callingbull captioned her post. “I’m officially on my journey to the Caribbean and three eagles flew over me. I feel blessed to be able to break barriers and be in spaces where others have told me I don’t belong.

“My heart is so happy I don’t think I’ll be able to process it all until I’m on set,” she added.

Manju Bangalore, has become the first ever NASA physicist to appear in the coveted swimsuit issue after being named one of the finalists.

“During her undergraduate career, she worked at two NASA centers, Marshall Space Flight Center and Johnson Space Center, on propulsion and the cockpit displays for the Orion spacecraft,” the magazine shared, adding that Bangalore has “dreamed of becoming an astronaut since she was 4 years old. ”

Traveling ICU Nurse Hillory Fields from Florida, was also one of the lucky ones chosen. She called the chance to be in the magazine “a FULL CIRCLE MOMENT!” and wrote that she “couldn’t think of a better way to inspire women to be intentional with what you speak over your life.”
