2021 US maternal deaths highest in 60 years

MIn 2021, the United States saw their highest level of maternal deaths since 1965.

From 2020, the maternal death rate rose dramatically in 2021. It experienced a 40% increase. Wall Street Journal reported. It was almost double the 2018 figure.

1205 women died during or shortly after childbirth in 2021 compared to 861 and 754 respectively in 2020 and 2019.

The U.S. maternal death rate is now at 33 per 100,000 live births. This makes it the highest in high-income nations.

Comparatively, the maternal death rate in the United Kingdom is lower than that of the U.S. (assuming rates remain constant in 2021). Norway has the lowest maternal mortality rate with 1.7 deaths per 100,000 live births.

According to the outlet, these factors include cardiovascular problems, healthcare disparities as well as the COVID-19 epidemic and medical shortages.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, obesity is the main factor that distinguishes the U.S. The agency cited a study showing an increase in the number of pregnant women with chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, or chronic heart disease. Pregnancy-related deaths are most often due to heart disease.

Racial disparities exist in maternal mortality. Black mothers are 2.5 times more likely to die soon after giving birth than their white counterparts. Also, black women are more likely to be obese. According to the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health from 2015-2018, black women are 2.3 times more likely that non-Hispanic White women to be overweight and 50% more likely than to be obese. Nearly 4/5 black women in America are overweight or obese.

Others believe racism or a lack access to quality medical care are the main causes of the imbalance.

The CDC stated that more than 80% pregnancy-related deaths in America can be avoided and that it is important to start working on heart health long before the baby arrives.
