Zelensky surprised by Trump Truth post but agrees war must stop
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed surprise following his meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, where Trump called for Russia and Ukraine to “stop where they are” in their ongoing war. Zelensky agreed that a halt to fighting at the current front lines is important, emphasizing that Ukraine did not start the conflict and placing obligation on Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump urged both sides to cease hostilities and seek a deal, suggesting they each claim victory and let history judge.
During the meeting, Zelensky and Trump discussed sensitive issues including the potential U.S. provision of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine-a topic they chose to keep private due to concerns over escalation with Russia. Zelensky hinted at a possible exchange involving drone technology from Ukraine in return for these missiles. He described their talks as productive but remained realistic about the prospects of receiving Tomahawks soon.
zelensky also highlighted ongoing challenges around territorial negotiations and the necessity of securing a ceasefire before addressing these issues. On Trump’s potential meeting with Putin, Zelensky expressed trust that the former president would pressure Russia to end the conflict. both leaders agreed on the importance of stopping the war as a critical first step toward peace.
Zelensky surprised by Trump Truth post following meeting but agrees war must ‘stop where we are’
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was caught off-guard during a press conference after meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House regarding Trump’s calls for Russia and Ukraine to “stop” their war, “where they are.”
“The president’s right, we have to stop where we are,” Zelensky told reporters Friday outside the White House. “This is important and then to speak.”
Zelensky, however, underscored that this is more about Russian President Vladimir Putin “because [Ukraine] did not begin this war.”
In a social media post published shortly after Trump departed the White House for a million-dollar fundraising dinner for his super PAC Make America Great Again Inc., he implored Russia and Ukraine to “stop where they are.”
It is unclear from the post whether Trump is calling for Russia and Ukraine to redraw their borders along the current front line of the war, after last month encouraging Ukraine in another post “to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,” or simply calling for a ceasefire.
In his readout of his roughly two-hour-long meeting with Zelensky, Trump described their sit-down as “very interesting, and cordial.”
“I told him, as I likewise strongly suggested to President Putin, that it is time to stop the killing, and make a DEAL!” he wrote. “Enough blood has been shed, with property lines being defined by War and Guts. They should stop where they are. Let both claim Victory, let History decide!”
In his own readout of the meeting to the reporters, delivered after a phone call with his European counterparts, Zelensky similarly described their sit-down as “productive,” but conveyed that the pair had decided to keep their discussions regarding the United States providing Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine private because the U.S. was concerned about escalation.
“I think they are afraid of the Tomahawks,” Zelensky said of Russia. “They understand the weapons we have, and they understand the combination with Tomahawks. We need the combination, and they are afraid of this combination and what we can do.”
When asked if he is hopeful about receiving Tomahawks from the U.S. after the meeting, Zelensky quipped that he is “realistic.”
Before their meeting, Zelensky had previewed a possible drone technology sharing agreement with the U.S. in exchange for Tomahawks. Afterward, he told reporters, “We decided we will work more with productions” regarding drones.
“The question is with all the lines, and orders, and the schedules,” he said. “It’s a difficult process, but I think this is a positive signal. We will work on it.”
He and Trump also discussed security guarantees from the U.S. and Ukraine’s air defenses, but not secondary sanctions, Zelensky said.
“Of course, the question of territory is a very sensitive question, the most difficult question,” Zelensky added. “I know Russia has another position. They really want to occupy everything, but now they want, before any ceasefire, to make a deal about our territories, [et cetera]. Our position is, ‘Look, we need a ceasefire, so we need to sit, and speak, and understand where we are.’ I think this is the most important first step.”
When asked about Trump’s insistence that peace is difficult because Zelensky and Putin “hate” each other, the Ukrainian replied, “It is strange if they try to kill all of us, I’ll have another attitude to this person. I have the same attitude to this man.”

Of Trump possibly meeting with Putin as soon as two weeks from now in Budapest, Hungary, Zelensky said he is counting on the president to put “pressure on Putin to stop the war.”
“We trust the United States and that the president wants to finish this war,” he said. “It’s difficult, a tough solution. It’s understandable why. For us, it is essential, our country.”
