Zelensky rejects Trump’s claim of ending Ukraine war in a day.
Ukrainian President Zelensky Responds to Trump’s Claim of Ending Russia’s War in a Day
In a recent interview, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed President Donald Trump’s assertion that he could end Russia’s war in Ukraine within a day if he were reelected.
“It seems to me that the sole desire to bring the war to an end is beautiful,” Zelensky stated. “But this desire should be based on some real-life experience. Well, it looks as if Donald Trump had already these 24 hours once in his time. We were at war, not a full-scale war, but we were at war, and as I assume, he had that time at his disposal, but he must have had some other priorities.”
While Russian troops did not launch a full-fledged invasion of Ukraine until 2022, more than a year after Trump left office, Russia had already annexed Crimea in 2014. Since then, fighting has been ongoing in the eastern Ukrainian region known as the Donbas.
Trump’s Promise to End the War
Trump has repeatedly claimed that he could end the war within a day if he were to assume the presidency again. However, he has not provided any details on how he would achieve this. One potential solution could involve Ukraine conceding territory currently under Russian occupation, but the Ukrainian government has firmly stated that it is unwilling to cross that red line.
“If we are talking about ending the war at the cost of Ukraine — in other words, to make us give up our territories, well — I think, in this way, [Joe] Biden could have brought it to an end even in five minutes, but we would not agree,” Zelensky emphasized.
During Trump’s presidency, he temporarily withheld congressionally-approved military aid to Ukraine in an attempt to pressure Zelensky to investigate then-Democratic front-runner Biden. This incident led to Trump’s first impeachment in the House of Representatives and subsequent acquittal in the Senate.
Republican Candidates’ Stance on Aid to Ukraine
The Republican presidential candidates have varying opinions on whether the United States should continue providing aid to Ukraine. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis initially referred to the war as a “territorial dispute” but later retracted his statement following criticism. On the other hand, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence, and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott have expressed support for backing Ukraine.
The Biden administration has already provided approximately $40 billion in military aid to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in 2022. With the possibility of the war extending beyond next year’s election, the actions of the future White House occupant may significantly impact the outcome of the conflict.
