Youngkin’s decision to avoid GOP presidential race became more challenging after recent poll.
Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s Potential Presidential Run Gains Momentum
Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) may find it harder to resist the allure of the 2024 presidential race, thanks to a promising new poll that has caught the attention of political pundits.
A recent poll conducted by VCU’s Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs in July revealed that Youngkin is currently the only Republican who could secure victory in his home state if pitted against President Joe Biden. Surprisingly, former President Donald Trump trails behind Biden by 3 percentage points, while Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) would find himself in a tie, according to the Hill.
Youngkin’s Ambiguous Stance on Presidential Aspirations
In May, when directly asked about his intentions to run for president in 2024, the Virginia Republican seemed to decline, although his team later clarified that he hadn’t completely ruled it out.
“No,” Youngkin replied when asked if he would be joining the race “later this year.” ”I’m going to be working in Virginia this year.”
“And so our House and Senate are up for full reelection this year. We have a House that’s controlled by Republicans and a Senate that’s controlled by Democrats,” he continued. “I want to hold our House, and I’d like to flip our Senate. And I think we’re doing a really good job in Virginia, and I think this is a chance to bring that to voters.”
A Youngkin aide clarified that the governor’s response was based on a literal interpretation, ruling out joining the presidential race in 2023 but leaving the possibility open for a later entry. Youngkin also evaded giving a clear answer when asked about his government aspirations.
“So in the words of LBJ, you will not seek and, if nominated, you will not serve and accept the Republican nomination for president of the United States?” Baker asked.
“We’ll leave that one to LBJ,” Youngkin replied with a chuckle.
While Trump continues to dominate the polls in the Republican race, his ongoing legal troubles could potentially jeopardize his campaign, creating an opportunity for other contenders to emerge.
The recent poll, conducted from July 14-25, showcasing Youngkin’s lead over Biden in Virginia has undoubtedly added fuel to the speculation surrounding his presidential ambitions.
