Youngkin backs Vance for 2028 while silent on his own future

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) has backed Vice President JD Vance for president in 2028, the latest high-profile Republican to voice his support for what is a likely bid to succeed President Donald Trump.

“I agree with President Trump, I agree with Marco Rubio: I think Vice President Vance would be a great nominee,” Youngkin told Jacqui Heinrich on Fox News Sunday.

Youngkin now joins other prominent figures on the Right who have seemingly endorsed Vance years out from the 2028 presidential election.

Last month, Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk vowed at AmericaFest to use her organization to get Vance elected as the 48th president “in the most resounding way possible.” At the same conference, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) also backed Vance, telling the crowd at the end of her speech, “JD Vance 2028.”

As the GOP coalesces around Vance, questions remain about Youngkin’s own future, especially given his close relationship to Trump and speculation he could seek the Oval Office himself.

In the Fox News interview, however, Youngkin was mum on any potential decision, even as his term as Virginia governor has mere days left. He stressed that he is focused on the 2026 midterm elections.

GLENN YOUNGKIN: THE GREAT VIRGINIA RENAISSANCE

“I think the most important thing we can do, just like Vice President Vance said recently, is stay focused on the here and now. We have to deliver. We have to deliver for Americans and Virginians. We have huge elections in 2026 to keep and expand our majorities in the House and the Senate,” he said.

Youngkin is due to depart the governor’s mansion on Jan. 17. Succeeding him is Democrat Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger, who presided over widespread Democrat wins in Virginia in the 2025 midyear elections.
