‘You Waited Until Putin Started Killing Innocent People’: Ukrainian Parliament Member Calls For Help, Says Her Country Is Living A Nightmare

Ukrainian member of parliament Halyna Yanchenko told Fox News that her nation was living “a nightmare” and criticized western nations for waiting until Russian President Vladimir Putin “started killing innocent people” before implementing sanctions.

Yanchenko joined “Your World” host Neil Cavuto from her home in Kyiv, and she explained some of the things that she and the others in the capital city had lived through in the six days since the Russian invasion began.

Cavuto began with the words of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has refused to flee his country even as Putin has reportedly sent mercenaries to assassinate him, pleading with the European Union to admit Ukraine and stand with them against Russia’s attack. (The EU Parliament did approve Ukraine’s request a short time later and the process is ongoing.)

“What did you think of what President Zelensky had to say?” he asked.

“Well, what can I say? Actually it’s difficult to command the situation now. I apologize because I worry a little bit. We just had a very loud shelling over Kyiv. And my heart still beats hard, fast,” Yanchenko replied.

“That’s understandable,” Cavuto nodded. “Where are you now?”

“I’m in my home in Kyiv. Kyiv is under constant shelling over the past six days. I know that not many Americans know where is Ukraine, like how big it is, how big and how dangerous Russia might be,” Yanchenko continued, sharing a graphic that showed just how large Russia is in comparison to Ukraine.

“Look at this picture. The red one is Russia. The yellow one is Ukraine. And the yellow country, as Ukraine, we are fighting back one of the most powerful army in the world. For the past six days, we have gone through nightmares. I’m very proud of our president. I’m very proud of our army. I’m very proud of common people who left their daily routine and went to territory defense, to get weapons, protect their cities, protect their country, protect their family and their children. I should tell you that my country is coming – is going through a nightmare these days,” Yanchenko added.

Cavuto asked how she and others around her were dealing with the upheaval and the explosions.

“It’s difficult to get used to it despite the fact that the war – this huge aggression has taken over the past six days. Over all, in Ukraine, people are trying to calm down by doing something for army, by doing something for information resistance,” she explained, noting that everyone coped in their own way.

Yanchenko went on to say that the real tragedy was Putin’s willingness to direct attacks against civilians and even children.

“I should tell you, that Putin does not hesitate to fire at peaceful civilians. Russian occupation troops are hitting residential neighborhoods. They are hitting kindergartens, hospitals with people in them. Yesterday they pretty much bombed the downtown of Kharkiv, a city east of Ukraine with over one million inhabitants here. A couple hundred civilians, peaceful, innocent people were murdered over this past six days, including children…We have information about 16 Ukrainian children murdered by Russian troops or by heavy shelling of Russian troops. About 50 children have serious injuries. We are not sure we will be able to save them.”

“Halyna, these seem like empty words but just hang in there,” Cavuto replied. “I can’t fathom what you and your colleagues, fellow citizens, parliament members are going through, every noise, day in and day out. But your courage is remarkable. Please be well and thank you for joining us.”

Cavuto went to wrap up the interview, but Yanchenko asked for a moment to say one more thing.

“I want to address American politicians now. Please show them this video if they miss it. I’m addressing the U.S. as a NATO country. I ask you to react on Russian’s blackmailing, using nuclear weapons now until it’s not too late. You know, two days ago, Putin said that he is planning to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. This is really serious. This is real blackmailing. Given the fact that this – he’s a madman, he’s absolutely crazy. He can actually do it. I’m addressing the U.S. as a NATO country and NATO member. Given the fact that nuclear weapons might and will destroy not only Ukraine but other NATO countries. There’s no time to hesitate. Please put more sanctions on Russia and please actually start having no fly zones above Ukraine. Russia hits Ukraine heavily from air. The nuclear power will come from air as well. There’s no time to hesitate. Do a — no-fly zone over Ukraine now until it’s not too late.”

Yanchenko concluded with criticism for the late implementation of sanctions against Russia, saying, “You waited until Putin started killing innocent people before you impose sanctions. We are thankful for the sanctions, but please, do not hesitate anymore. Take actions until it’s not too late and a couple million people are buried dead in the center of Europe, this is my message to American politicians and I ask you to pass it to them.”
