Actor Luke Grimes Finds Inspiration in Hugh Grant for New Rom-Com
Actor Luke Grimes revealed that he drew inspiration from one of the most revered actors in the romantic comedy genre while filming his latest Netflix movie, “Happiness for Beginners.”
The romantic comedies, calling him “perfect.””>seasoned cast member of “Yellowstone” couldn’t stop praising British star Hugh Grant, known for his roles in beloved rom-coms like “Love Actually,” “Notting Hill,” and “Bridget Jones’s Diary.”
“I think Hugh Grant was the romantic-comedy god,” Grimes gushed during an exclusive interview with People. “He was always the straight man, but he was funny enough on his own.”
Grimes admired Grant’s ability to strike the perfect balance between humor and allowing other characters to shine.
“He had just enough that he was perfect,” Grimes explained. “You actually believed him and felt for him and had a lot of empathy for him. So he was sort of my North Star [in] trying to do this movie.”
“Happiness for Beginners” is based on a 2015 novel of the same name and follows the story of Helen (played by Ellie Kemper), a divorcee who embarks on an Appalachian Trail survivalist course and meets Jake (Grimes), a friend of her younger brother.
While Grimes has appeared in movies with romantic storylines before, this is his first official foray into the rom-com genre. He admitted that it had always been a goal of his.
“I always wanted to do a romantic comedy. It was on my bucket list,” Grimes shared. “There’s enough bad stuff in the world. And I read the script and I was like, ‘I think I could do this.'”
Although he was initially nervous about tackling a new genre, Grimes believes the experience turned out well.
“I didn’t know if I’d be any good. But in this room when we’re rehearsing with all these really funny people, they accepted me into their circle, and I got to watch them be really funny and try it myself,” he said.
Grimes understands the appeal of romantic comedies and why they exist.
“Sometimes I just want to watch something a little lighter and a little more happy and go to bed with good dreams instead of bad ones,” Grimes expressed.
