X offices raided in Paris as part of Grok investigation

Paris prosecutors, with Europol support, raided X’s offices as part of a Grok-related inquiry into alleged misconduct on the platform, including potential complicity in possessing and spreading child sexual abuse material and other unlawful content. The inquiry, which began in January 2025, initially focused on algorithmic manipulation and data handling and has since expanded to allegations involving deepfakes, Holocaust denial content, and manipulation of automated systems. Authorities have summoned Elon Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino for voluntary interviews in Paris, and additional X employees might potentially be interviewed; X has described the probe as politically motivated and said information will be shared via Instagram and LinkedIn after the raid. The European Union has also opened a probe under the Digital Services Act into Grok’s generation of sexualized images and related risks, with authorities assessing whether Musk and X properly evaluated Grok integration; the EU probe follows a December fine against X for data-access issues and deceptive verification markers. The raid occurred shortly after Musk announced SpaceX’s merger with xAI, a deal reportedly valued at about $1.25 trillion.

Prosecutors in Paris searched the office’s Elon Musk’s social media platform X on Tuesday as part of an investigation into the alleged misconduct linked to the platform’s Grok artificial intelligence tool.

Investigators from the Paris prosecutor’s cybercrime unit, with the support of the European Union’s police agency Europol, executed the search as part of an inquiry into possible “complicity” in possessing and spreading child sex abuse material and other unlawful content on the platform.

The Paris prosecutor’s office said in an X post that the raid was a continuation of an investigation launched in January 2025. The office said it would be deactivating its X account and that information will now be distributed through Instagram and LinkedIn.

The investigation first focused on algorithmic manipulation and data handling, and has since expanded to include allegations related to sexually explicit deep fakes, Holocaust denial content, and manipulation of automated systems.

The company’s Global Government Account previously called the investigation “politically motivated” and denied all allegations of misconduct.

Officials have reportedly summoned Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino for “voluntary interviews” on April 20 in Paris, and added that employees of the company may also be interviewed as witnesses later that week. Yaccarino was CEO from May 2023 to July 2025.

French law makes Holocaust denial a crime punishable by fines and imprisonment, and it is alleged that content appearing on X attributed to Grok has included such material.

The raid on X offices occurred just one day after Musk announced that SpaceX will merge with xAI. The combined companies are reported to be worth $1.25 trillion.

In January, the European Union launched an investigation into X over the platform’s generation of sexualized images of women and children.

The European Commission, an independent body that enforces EU laws, said it will determine if Musk and X have properly assessed the risks of integrating Grok into the platform.

The investigation was launched under the Digital Services Act, the same law used to fine Musk $140 million in December for the platform providing insufficient access to data and the deceptive design of verified markers for accounts.
