Elon Musk’s X Blocks First Amendment-Focused Nonprofit from Promoting Family Event
Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter, has made a decision that contradicts its supposed support for free speech. The platform has blocked a nonprofit organization, The Freedom Forum, from purchasing ads to promote their “First Amendment Festival” in Washington, D.C. on September 9.
The Chief Digital Officer at The Freedom Forum, Doug Neil, expressed his confusion and frustration regarding this decision. He stated, “We were both confused and frustrated.”
The organization initially filed an ad for the event on August 23, but X’s Ad Support claimed that the content violated their Political Content policy. Despite multiple attempts to adjust the ad to meet X’s terms, it was rejected each time by the website’s bot. On August 25, an X representative informed The Freedom Forum that they only allow “cause-based or news-based” political ads and that the organization was not permitted to submit additional ads.
This decision left Neil perplexed, as Elon Musk has presented himself as a vocal advocate for the First Amendment and has described himself as a “free speech absolutist.”
The Freedom Forum is a non-partisan organization renowned for funding the Newseum, a museum in Washington, D.C. that promotes journalism and freedom of the press.
X announced on Wednesday that it would expand its efforts to host political advertising and combat election misinformation. They had previously authorized ”cause-based advertising” in January.
X has not responded to requests for comment from the Washington Examiner.
