NFTs are stored on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/b\/blockchain.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blockchain<\/a>, a public digital \u201cledger\u201d of transactions stored on internet-connected computers around the world, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-56371912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The viral image falsely alleges <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CVyc4GRv2gQ\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=45d5ef9d-2bc9-4371-9a7e-02fe60062907\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in an Instagram post<\/a> that The New York Times published an article about NFTs being the \u201ctop expense\u201d for \u201clow-income\u201d men this year. The subheadline of the purported article reads, \u201cEarly tax reporting shows 68% of men making under 23k spent most of their money on NFTs this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is no record of The New York Times publishing the article in the Instagram post. The image attempts to suggest it was published as part of the newspaper\u2019s \u201cThe Shift\u201d column, but a review of \u201cThe Shift\u201d articles dating back to 2017 shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/column\/the-shift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no matching headline<\/a>. Nor can it be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/search?dropmab=false&amp;endDate=20211108&amp;query=NFTs&amp;sort=best&amp;startDate=20211008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anywhere else<\/a> on The New York Times\u2019 website. The outlet also hasn\u2019t shared any articles with that headline on its <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nytimes?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">verified<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nytimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social media<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nytimes\/?hl=enhttps:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nytimes\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accounts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe New York Times did not write or publish the headline in that screenshot,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jordan-cohen-51796816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Cohen<\/a>, the executive director of communications for the publication, told Check Your Fact in an email. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/07\/09\/fact-check-new-york-times-publish-article-donald-trump-died\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did The New York Times Publish An Article Claiming Donald Trump Died?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>National media outlets such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/search?q=68%25+nfts+men\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/search-results\/search?q=nfts%2068%25%20men\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fox News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/search?searchtext=nft%2068%25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ABC News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/#search-form:\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBS News<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/search\/?q=nft+men+68%25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NBC News<\/a> also haven\u2019t reported that \u201cearly tax reporting\u201d showed 68 percent of men earning under $23,000 a year spent \u201cmost of their money\u201d on NFTs this year.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time social media users have shared a fake New York Times article.
