She suffered from preexisting health conditions prior to her \u201cclimate change\u201d diagnosis including \u201casthma, diabetes, and some heart failure.\u201d The senior citizen\u2019s living conditions may have contributed to her breathing difficulties, according to the news outlet, which noted that she resides \u201cin a trailer\u201d with poor ventilation and \u201cno air conditioning.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Dr. Kyle Merritt <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/canadian-becomes-world-first-patient-052233541.html\">told<\/a> Glacier Media he diagnosed the woman as suffering from \u201cclimate change\u201d after treating her at an emergency room in Nelson, British Columbia, in late June for asthma-related symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has diabetes. She has some heart failure. \u2026 She lives in a trailer, no air conditioning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The emergency room doctor recounted his initial medical assessment of the woman.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAll of her health problems have all been worsened. And she\u2019s really struggling to stay hydrated,\u201d he detailed.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Merritt\u2019s decision to directly tie the Nelson resident\u2019s breathing difficulties to \u201cclimate change\u201d marks the first time the phenomenon \u201chas been given as a cause of suffering by a medical professional,\u201d according to Euronews.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike death by heat, doctors have traditionally struggled to clinically attribute mortality and severe illness to air pollution,\u201d the <em>Times Colonist<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timescolonist.com\/bc-news\/bc-doctor-clinically-diagnoses-patient-as-suffering-from-climate-change-4723540\">observed<\/a> on November 4.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Merritt, this summer\u2019s wildfire season changed all that,\u201d the newspaper revealed, noting the physician zeroed in on the smoke produced by wildfires in the region at the time to justify his clinical diagnosis of \u201cclimate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16990598\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" readability=\"37\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2021\/07\/wi\/ap\/03\/canada-heat-wave-helicopter-pilot-prepares-drop-water-wildfire-burning-lytton-friday-july-2021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16990598 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/canada-heat-wave-helicopter-pilot-prepares-drop-water-wildfire-burning-lytton-friday-july-2021-1024x685-1.jpg\" alt=\"The Associated Press\" width=\"1024\" height=\"685\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>A helicopter pilot prepares to drop water on a wildfire burning in Lytton, B.C., on Friday, July 2, 2021. (Darryl Dyck\/The Canadian Press via AP)<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhen a patient came in struggling to breathe, Merritt knew the smoke \u2014 that hadn\u2019t lifted from the region for days on end \u2014 had made a case of asthma worse,\u201d the publication recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the first time in his 10 years as a physician, the ER doctor picked up his patient\u2019s chart and penned in the words \u2018climate change,&#8217;\u201d the <em>Times Colonist<\/em> detailed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re not looking at the underlying cause, and we\u2019re just treating the symptoms, we\u2019re just going to keep falling further and further behind,\u201d Dr. Merritt told Glacier Media. He did not disclose how he treated his first \u201cclimate change\u201d patient for the symptoms she allegedly suffered in connection with the phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>British Columbia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2021\/07\/02\/canada-wildfire-burns-village-temperature\/\">endured<\/a> record-breaking temperatures from June through September that <a href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/news\/local-news\/bc-wildfires-update-heres-the-latest-on-wildfire-situation-in-british-columbia\">caused<\/a> at least 209 wildfires. Provincial authorities ordered at least 243 properties to be evacuated in connection with the fires.
