At the time, Cachu was a few weeks shy of his 18th birthday, but was tried as an adult.<\/p>\n<p>An attorney for the Amela family says they are outraged about the release and shocked that the District Attorney\u2019s Office failed to even consult with them about the move.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Asked to explain the release, Gasc\u00f3n said that his office had hoped to move Cachu into the juvenile detention system, but that effort failed because \u201cthe whole system is evolving.\u201d He did not explain why he had not contacted the victim\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Gasc\u00f3n has sought reduced sentences for criminals as part of his \u201creforms\u201d to the system, clashing with prosecutors and victims\u2019 families. Last year, shortly after taking office, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/crime\/2020\/12\/15\/soros-backed-da-george-gascon-seeks-reduced-punishment-for-accused-cop-killer-in-la\/\">sought<\/a> a reduced sentence for a man convicted of murdering two people, including&nbsp;Los Angeles Sheriff\u2019s Department Deputy Joseph Solano.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2020 election, Gasc\u00f3n defeated incumbent Jackie Lacie, the first African American woman to hold the post, after Black Lives Matter activists targeted her. George Soros donated millions of dollars to Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s campaign, and members of the Democratic establishment endorsed him. In a particularly ugly move, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti withdrew his endorsement of Lacey and backed Gasc\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>Gasc\u00f3n had previously served as D.A. of San Francisco, presiding over an explosion of petty crime that has made the city synonymous with homelessness, drug use, and public defacation on sidewalks. He faced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/radio\/2021\/03\/15\/exclusive-widow-murdered-la-sheriff-los-angeles-da-george-gascon-releases-murders-robbers-rapists-child-killers-cop-killers\/\">recall<\/a> effort by opponents earlier this year, but they failed to gather enough signatures from voters by the deadline. They have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-09-15\/first-effort-to-recall-los-angeles-district-attorney-george-gascon-fizzles-out-but-a-retry-is-coming\">vowed<\/a> to try a second time.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joel B.
