Text in the image reads, \u201cThe world\u2019s first ambulance service.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/06\/24\/fact-check-jonathan-tortoise-oldest-land-animal-alive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Image Show The Tortoise That Is The \u2018Oldest Known Land Animal Alive Today\u2019?)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found that photo published on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/news-photo\/one-man-anti-gas-ambulance-and-resuscitator-designed-and-news-photo\/3254245\">Getty Images<\/a>, where it is dated July 1941. The Getty Images caption describes it as showing a \u201cone-man anti-gas ambulance and resuscitator, designed and made for use by the Home Guard.\u201d The Home Guard started as a militia in Britain during WWII as the \u201clast line of defense\u201d against the invasion of German soldiers, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwm.org.uk\/history\/the-real-dads-army\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Imperial War Museums<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That 1941 picture does not, however, show the first-ever ambulance service, as ambulance systems existed several hundred years prior to the 1940s.&nbsp;The first ambulance recorded worldwide was used by Spanish forces during the siege of M\u00e1laga in 1487, <a href=\"https:\/\/indianahealth.care\/history-of-ems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indiana Health Integrated Care<\/a> reports. The book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/books\/edition\/Disaster_Medicine\/xo53E_ygvBoC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;bsq=1487\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Disaster Medicine<\/a>\u201d further corroborates that the first record of an ambulance being used was in 1487.<\/p>\n<p>The first recorded horse-drawn ambulance service in Britain, where the Facebook image was taken, was in 1883, according to the Liverpool Ambulance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolambulance.com\/page\/\">website<\/a>. In 1865, the U.S. Army formed America\u2019s first civilian horse-drawn ambulance service, medical transport service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercyflight.org\/history-of-ems\/\">Mercy Flight\u2019s<\/a> website states.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An image shared on Facebook\u00a0purportedly shows the world\u2019s first ambulance service.Verdict: False The use of ambulance systems can be traced going back to at least the 1400s.
