A staff member could be dismissed for violating the policy, according to the Ivy League university\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>The video, titled \u201cWhy Pronouns Matter,\u201d was recently uploaded to Columbia University\u2019s official YouTube channel, and claimed that \u201cnormalizing pronoun sharing helps create a safer space for people of all genders and gender expressions.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The university stressed that \u201ca growing number\u201d of people are using pronouns other than \u201che\/hm\u201d and \u201cshe\/her.\u201d Now, people are starting to use pronouns like \u201cthey\/them, xe\/xem, ze\/hir, per\/pers, and ey\/em,\u201d the video stated.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Watch Below:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why Pronouns Matter\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SRh7j2g95HU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The university goes on to insist that pronouns \u201cmatter,\u201d because \u201cyou can\u2019t know a person\u2019s gender by just looking at them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsking for, and using correct pronouns is a way to respect those around you, and create and inclusive environment,\u201d the video states. \u201cThis is especially important for queer and transgender people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you slip up and use the wrong pronouns, simply correct your mistake and move on,\u201d the video advises.<\/p>\n<p>In the vide0, the university goes on to warn that \u201cintentionally misgendering someone by refusing to use the correct pronouns or name is a violation of the Columbia University nondiscrimination policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The university even goes as far as to suggest that not using someone else\u2019s preferred pronoun can risk negatively affecting their \u201cmental health.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWords matter. Even unintentional errors can create challenges,\u201d the video stated. \u201cResearch shows that using someone\u2019s correct pronouns has a big impact on their mental health and well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The video goes on to advise the campus community \u201cshare&nbsp;your own pronouns first\u201d when introducing oneself to others, and \u201cuse pronouns with your name&nbsp;in meetings, and on nametags,\u201d in order to \u201ccreate a&nbsp;more inclusive Columbia community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Columbia\u2019s \u201cEqual Opportunity and Affirmative Action Policies &amp; Procedures\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/eoaa.columbia.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/content\/EOAA%20Policies%20and%20Procedures%20Updated%20092021.pdf\">state<\/a> that any violation of the nondiscrimination policy can lead to punishments ranging from a formal warning to \u201cdismissal\u201d of employment.<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"21\">\n<p>Discipline may include, but is not limited to: reprimand\/warning, change of the Respondent\u2019s job duties, disciplinary probation, revocation of honors and awards, restricted access to University facilities or activities, a \u201cno-contact\u201d order, relocation of a Respondent\u2019s University-provided residence, relocation of Respondent\u2019s workplace\/station, demotion, administrative leave with or without pay, suspension with or without pay, unpaid leave, and dismissal or restriction from University employment. The University may also require training or educational intervention.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/universitylife.columbia.edu\/pronouns-faq-staff\">website<\/a> says that \u201cunintentional and occasional misuse of a pronoun is not discrimination,\u201d but advised staff members to avoid using what a student believes to be a \u201cwrong\u201d pronoun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to keep the student\u2019s experience in mind, because you don\u2019t want to inadvertently refer to someone by the wrong gender,\u201d the website warns. \u201cEven unintentional errors can create challenges for students in the learning environment.
