Research has not shown a link between miscarriages and COVID-19 vaccines.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The image was originally <a href=\"https:\/\/defendingtherepublic.org\/covid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published<\/a> by lawyer Sidney Powell\u2019s organization Defending the Republic. Its text identifies 2,508 as the \u201cnumber of miscarriages that have occurred as a result of the experimental COVID \u2018vaccine,\u2019\u201d citing the private organization OpenVAERS. The <a href=\"https:\/\/openvaers.com\/faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpenVAERS website<\/a> says it pulls its data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/vaers.hhs.gov\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System<\/a> (VAERS), a system managed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/p>\n<p>The Instagram post misinterprets data on the OpenVAERS website. The organization <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211016033956\/https:\/\/openvaers.com\/covid-data\/reproductive-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> that VAERS had received 2,508 reports of people experiencing miscarriages after COVID-19 vaccination through Oct. 8. However, OpenVAERS did not claim the vaccines caused those reported miscarriages.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/vaers.hhs.gov\/data.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VAERS website<\/a> states VAERS reports alone \u201ccannot be used to determine if a vaccine caused or contributed to an adverse event or illness\u201d and that reports \u201cmay contain information that is incomplete, inaccurate, coincidental, or unverifiable.\u201d Health care providers, vaccine makers and members of the general public can submit reports of adverse events to VAERS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVAERS is not designed to determine if a vaccine caused or contributed to an adverse event,\u201d the CDC states <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccinesafety\/ensuringsafety\/monitoring\/vaers\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on its website<\/a>. \u201cA report to VAERS does not mean the vaccine caused the event.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/10\/06\/fact-check-new-york-hospitals-refusing-release-newborn-babies-unvaccinated-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Are New York Hospitals Refusing To Release Newborn Babies To Unvaccinated Parents?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Research has not shown COVID-19 vaccines to cause miscarriages. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMc2113891?query=featured_home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> published by the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) Oct. 14 detailed a study conducted by researchers affiliated with the CDC and National Institutes of Health that found no increased risk of spontaneous abortion after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination either before conception or during pregnancy, compared to the expected rate of miscarriage in the general population. The NEJM also published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMc2114466\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">another article<\/a> Oct. 20 about a study by Norwegian, American and Canadian doctors that found \u201cno evidence of an increased risk for early pregnancy loss after Covid-19 vaccination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Journal of the American Medical Association&nbsp;in September published <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2784193\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research<\/a> about COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy and spontaneous abortion that found among 13,160 women identified as having had miscarriages, the \u201codds of COVID-19 vaccine exposure were not increased in the prior 28 days compared with women with ongoing pregnancies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResults from published studies suggest that there is no increased risk of first trimester loss in patients who receive any of the three vaccines currently approved for emergency use authorization,\u201d Johns Hopkins Medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/coronavirus\/the-covid19-vaccine-and-pregnancy-what-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">states<\/a> in an article on its website. \u201cThese include the Pfizer, Moderna and the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends for pregnant individuals to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The ACOG <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/covid-19\/covid-19-vaccines-and-pregnancy-conversation-guide-for-clinicians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also states<\/a> on its website that \u201cnone of the COVID-19 vaccines available for use under emergency use authorization or U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) license causes infertility or spontaneous abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Johnson &amp; Johnson, Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines \u201chave been thoroughly tested and found to be safe and effective in preventing severe COVID-19,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/coronavirus\/is-the-covid19-vaccine-safe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johns Hopkins Medicine<\/a>. The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine has received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/comirnaty-and-pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FDA approval<\/a> for people ages 16 and older, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/janssen-covid-19-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/moderna-covid-19-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two vaccines<\/a> available in the U.S. have received authorization for emergency use by the FDA. Over 58.5 percent of the U.S. population has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Nov. 9, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#vaccinations_vacc-people-onedose-pop-12yr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">data<\/a> from the CDC.<\/p>\n<p>Check Your Fact called Powell\u2019s law office several times, sent Defending the Republic two messages through a <a href=\"https:\/\/defendingtherepublic.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">form<\/a> on its website and emailed the email address listed on the organization\u2019s Florida charity registration <a href=\"https:\/\/csapp.fdacs.gov\/CSPublicApp\/CheckACharity\/CheckACharity.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">application<\/a> several times regarding the image\u2019s claim, but did not receive a response.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An image shared on Instagram claims there have been 2,508 miscarriages in the U.S. \u201cas a result of\u201d COVID-19 vaccines.
