They packed a square on one of Wuhan\u2019s main roads to watch a Chinese team play against a South Korean team in the online game <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leagueoflegends.com\/en-us\/\"><span>League of Legends<\/span><\/a><span> (LOL).<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>League of Legends is a tremendously popular esports game, in which two teams of five players battle for control of a fantasy game board using a vast selection of playable heroes. Launched in 2009, it was a pioneer of competitive esports play and \u201cgames as a service\u201d \u2013 games that keep going forever with constant updates and additions of new content, and new opportunities for avid players to spend money purchasing the latest content. There are about 140 playable characters in total, but only a few are available for free to new players.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As one might guess from that description, LOL is very addictive for its dedicated players and has grown into a huge business for esports leagues. Publisher Riot Games <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leaguefeed.net\/did-you-know-total-league-of-legends-player-count-updated\/#:~:text=League%20of%20Legends%20player%20count%20has%20reached%20a%20total%20of,played%20games%20in%20the%20world.\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> 115 million active players worldwide in 2021. There are 117 teams currently competing in LOL\u2019s esports league, with 22 of them advancing to the annual World Championship in pursuit of $2.2 million in prize money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are websites <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lolesports.com\/\"><span>dedicated<\/span><\/a><span> to watching LOL esports matches online, but it is also hugely popular as a mass spectator sport. LOL viewing parties have been known to fill sports arenas with thousands of paying customers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>LOL is so popular in China that last August, a wanted fugitive could not resist playing a few rounds at an Internet cafe in Chongqing \u2013 and was promptly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kotaku.com.au\/2021\/08\/league-of-legends-player-arrested-by-off-duty-cop-in-internet-caf\/\"><span>arrested<\/span><\/a><span> by an off-duty police officer taking a LOL break at the same cafe. The fugitive was a highly-ranked player, so the cafe treated him like a celebrity and broadcast his user name over loudspeakers when he logged in. The cop heard the broadcast, rushed over as a video game fan to catch a glimpse of the famed esports competitor, and recognized his face from wanted posters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chinese livestreaming company Huya <\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.esportsobserver.com\/huya-media-rights-china-lol\/\">paid<\/a> $310 million<\/span><span> in April to become the exclusive broadcaster of Pro LOL events in China for five years; another Chinese company called Bilbili signed a three-year deal in 2020 to cover international events. Esports overall is a $15 billion industry in China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>LOL has also branched out into other media, most notably with a new Netflix animated series called <\/span><i><span>Arcane<\/span><\/i> <span>that swiftly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/81435684\">became<\/a> one of the most popular shows on the streaming giant \u2013 it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upcomer.com\/arcane-debuts-at-1-spot-on-netflix-dethrones-squid-game\/\"><span>knocked<\/span><\/a><span> the <\/span><span>much-discussed<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/squid-game-south-koreas-latest-cultural-phenomenon\/\"> <i><span>Squid Games <\/span><\/i><\/a><span>out of the top spot this week \u2013 and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/paultassi\/2021\/11\/09\/arcane-is-netflixs-top-rated-original-series-ever-according-to-imdb\/\"><span>scored<\/span><\/a><span> the highest ratings of any original series in Netflix history, from both regular viewers and professional critics.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Arcane <\/span><\/i><span>is a prequel to LOL that relates the backstory of some of its most popular characters. Its rave reviews praise its unique animation style, a blend of computer animation and watercolor painting, and its complex, extremely dark narrative, which leans more toward <\/span><i><span>Game of Thrones <\/span><\/i><span>than a Pixar animated film. It is not really suitable for young children, which means they are probably watching it in droves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The incident in Wuhan on Saturday involved a viewing party for the 2021 LOL World Championship, which pitted China\u2019s Edward Gaming team (EDG) against South Korea\u2019s DK team, the defending 2020 champions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The <\/span><i><span>Global Times <\/span><\/i><span>exuberantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/page\/202111\/1238353.shtml\">reported<\/a> China\u2019s 3-2 victory in the five-game series in a <\/span><span>separate article<\/span><span> that fawned over the \u201ccheers of joy\u201d from Chinese social media \u2013 even though the Chinese government is officially skeptical of online video games and <\/span><span>strictly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/08\/31\/china-bans-children-from-playing-video-games-more-than-3-hours-a-week\/\">regulates<\/a><\/span><span> the amount of time young people are allowed to play them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Chinese Communist Party\u2019s (CCP) concerns about the \u201cspiritual opium\u201d of online games evaporated at the chance to celebrate EDG\u2019s victory as another moment of Chinese nationalist triumph:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"19\">\n<p><span>Chinese netizens congratulated the team, with topics about the victory trending on various social media platforms. The topic \u201cEDG wins\u201d had been viewed more than 2.63 billion times as of press time on Sina Weibo, ranking top for a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The victory made fans\u2019 blood boil. Photos that went viral on Chinese social media platforms showed hundreds of fans on the streets on a playground, crowding in front of a screen livestreaming the game at midnight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Several fans of the EDG told the Global Times on Sunday that they didn\u2019t sleep on Saturday night and were glued to their screens watching the final game, which took place from Saturday night to the early hours of Sunday morning.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>However, even in the hour of triumph, the <\/span><i><span>Global Times <\/span><\/i><span>clucked its tongue at a few \u201ccrazy fans\u201d who \u201cwent a bit too far,\u201d including a few who decided to hold a little victory parade in which no one was wearing any clothes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The LOL fans who organized the 2,000-person viewing party in Wuhan <\/span><span>really <\/span><span>went too far, since China is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/world-news\/china-struggles-with-worst-covid-19-outbreaks-since-wuhan-origin-2602870\">struggling<\/a> with its <\/span><span>worst coronavirus outbreak<\/span><span> since early 2020, and Wuhan is the city where it all began.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><i><span>Global Times <\/span><\/i><span>did not explicitly mention the coronavirus outbreak in its story about the arrests of the LOL organizers in Wuhan.
