In the melee, he fired an AR-15 rifle in what his lawyers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/crime\/2020\/08\/28\/kyle-rittenhouse-lawyers-he-is-no-racist-exercised-right-to-self-defense\/\">claimed<\/a> was self-defense, killing two and wounding Grosskreutz.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats seized on the event in an attempt to blame President Donald Trump for the Kenosha riots, which had been a serious liability for then-candidate Joe Biden, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/2020-election\/2020\/08\/26\/joe-biden-condemns-needless-violence-in-kenosha-after-3-days-of-riots\/\">slow<\/a> to condemn them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2020\/09\/30\/joe-biden-claims-without-evidence-kyle-rittenhouse-is-a-white-supremacist\/\">claimed<\/a>, without evidence, that the 17-year-old Rittenhouse was a \u201cwhite supremacist\u201d \u2014 a claim that led immediately to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/2020-election\/2020\/09\/30\/kyle-rittenhouse-attorney-threatens-to-sue-joe-biden-for-false-white-supremacist-accusation\/\">threats<\/a> of a defamation lawsuit from Rittenhouse\u2019s attorney.<\/p>\n<p>Rittenhouse faces several counts of murder, as well as a weapons charge and a curfew citation.<\/p>\n<p>During cross-examination, defense attorney&nbsp;Corey Chirafisi noted that Grosskreutz had lied to police about being armed.<\/p>\n<p>The Racine&nbsp;<em>Journal Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/journaltimes.com\/news\/state-and-regional\/watch-live-defense-trying-to-poke-holes-in-testimony-of-man-shot-by-rittenhouse\/article_2381a49d-e29e-54c7-8f64-100eff18361d.html#tracking-source=breaking-live\">summarized<\/a> the exchange:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"36\">\n<p>Chirafisi brings up statement Grosskreutz made to police on Aug. 26, saying at some point during Aug. 25 his Glock fell off his waist. Grosskreutz said he didn\u2019t remember making that statement, but confirms it via written statement.<\/p>\n<p>Chirafisi says \u201cThat\u2019s a lie, no?\u201d regarding the statement the gun fell. Grosskreutz says what he wrote was not a lie. \u201cI told multiple officers that I dropped my firearm,\u201d the statement reads, according to Chirafisi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were chasing Mr. Rittenhouse with your gun, right?\u201d Chirafisi asks. Grosskreutz says \u201cI wasn\u2019t chasing the defendant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou omitted the fact (to police) that you ran up on him and had a Glock pistol in your hand?\u201d Chirafisi asks, which Grosskreutz confirms, but notes that he just got out of surgery and \u201cwas on pain meds,\u201d and the \u201ctraumatic experience I had just gone through.\u201d Grosskreutz says that the omission was not \u201cpurposeful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chirafisi then brings up that Grosskreutz had a \u201cthoughtful process\u201d to not share his occupation (out of concerns for safety) and make other statements accurately, but then he somehow didn\u2019t mention having a gun.<\/p>\n<p>Grosskreutz said he was advised by his lawyer to not answer questions from police about the shooting itself.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The defense attorney then showed Grosskreutz a still image from a video of the shooting, at the moment when his arm was shot \u2014 as he held a pistol in his hand, aimed at Rittenhouse.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t until you pointed your gun at him, advanced on him, with your gun \u2014 now your hand\u2019s down \u2014 pointed at him, that \u2014 that you fired, correct?\u201d Chirafisi asked.<\/p>\n<p>Grosskreutz responded: \u201cCorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>At that point, Rittenhouse, watching the exchange, rubbed his eyes, as if in relief. The prosecutor,&nbsp;Assistant District Attorney Binger, appeared to rest his forehead on his left hand, almost despondent, as he composed a message on his phone with his right.<\/p>\n<p>The defense ended its cross-examination when Grosskreutz admitted that he never tried to talk to Rittenhouse to stop the violence.<\/p>\n<p>Some observers opined that the defense should immediately move for a directed verdict \u2014 essentially, asking the judge to acquit Rittenhouse on the spot, on the grounds of self-defense.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"5.1525423728814\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Rittenhouse trial should be over immediately. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PHZnHS5rD9\">pic.twitter.com\/PHZnHS5rD9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Viva Frei (@thevivafrei) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thevivafrei\/status\/1457774701673996298?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 8, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Questions remain about the firearms charge, though Rittenhouse\u2019s lawyers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2020\/08\/30\/rittenhouse-lawyer-my-client-legally-possessed-a-rifle-in-wisconsin\/\">told<\/a> Breitbart News he obtained his AR-15 legally.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Facebook prevented users from defending Rittenhouse on the platform, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2020\/09\/02\/facebook-declares-kyle-rittenhouses-actions-a-mass-murder-wont-allow-posts-in-support\/\">calling<\/a> the incident a \u201cmass murder,\u201d thus presuming Rittenhouse\u2019s guilt. Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2020\/09\/04\/twitter-locks-account-of-kyle-rittenhouses-attorney-john-pierce\/\">locked<\/a> the account of a Rittenhouse attorney, and a police officer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/05\/15\/police-lieutenant-fired-for-donation-to-kyle-rittenhouse-defense-fund\/\">lost his job<\/a> for donating to Rittenhouse\u2019s defense.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/law-and-order\/2020\/08\/31\/donald-trump-kyle-rittenhouse-was-big-trouble-when-rioters-attacked-him\/\">said<\/a> at the time that it looked as if Rittenhouse had acted in self-defense \u2014 for which CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/clips\/2020\/09\/01\/cnns-keilar-trump-is-against-black-violence-hes-just-fine-with-white-violence\/\">accused<\/a> him of racism.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joel B.
