Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said the term \u201cnatural food\u201d needs to be redefined.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Verdict: False<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There is no evidence of Ocasio-Cortez making the statements attributed to her in the image. The article appears to be fabricated.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez,&nbsp;along with Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Ed Markey, introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/116\/bills\/hres109\/BILLS-116hres109ih.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green New Deal<\/a> in 2019, which aimed to address climate change and help the U.S. achieve net-zero carbon emissions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/02\/07\/691997301\/rep-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-releases-green-new-deal-outline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NPR<\/a> reported. The two reintroduced the legislation earlier this year ahead of President Joe Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/04\/23\/fact-sheet-president-bidens-leaders-summit-on-climate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leaders Summit on Climate<\/a>&nbsp;in April, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/ahead-bidens-climate-summit-lawmakers-relaunch-green-new-deal-2021-04-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A post on Facebook shows what appears to be an Oct. 29 article from a newspaper called the Minneapolis Red-Star Tribune bearing the headline: \u201cAOC: Time to redefine \u2018natural food.&#8217;\u201d The article discusses comments Ocasio-Cortez allegedly made in support for moving to <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/age-of-awareness\/cellular-agriculture-alternative-animal-products-a5e15eb48784\">cellular agriculture<\/a>, the production of animal-based products from cell cultures rather than directly from animals. Some scientists have offered this technology as a way to combat climate change and ensure food security, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/srccl\/chapter\/chapter-5\/\">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis move will help us eliminate farms, and the unpleasant types of people who work on them, while simultaneously creating an entirely urban world,\u201d the image quotes her as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Check Your Fact found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Minneapolis+red+star+tribune&amp;rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS966US966&amp;ei=3lqFYZmSIbCFytMP8MG_kA8&amp;oq=Minneapolis+red+star+tribune&amp;gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAMyBQgAEIAEOgcIABBHELADOgQIABANOggIABAIEA0QHjoGCAAQDRAeOgoIABCxAxCDARANSgQIQRgAUJMVWIgtYPszaAFwAngAgAF0iAGEB5IBBDExLjGYAQCgAQHIAQjAAQE&amp;sclient=gws-wiz&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiZ-biu0YH0AhWwgnIEHfDgD_IQ4dUDCA4&amp;uact=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no evidence<\/a> of a newspaper called the Minneapolis Red-Star Tribune, and there is no record of Ocasio-Cortez making the statements about redefining \u201cnatural food\u201d or about \u201cunpleasant types\u201d working on farms. A search of Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=cellular%20agriculture%20(from%3Arepaoc)&amp;src=typed_query&amp;f=top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">verified<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=cellular%20agriculture%20(from%3Aaoc)&amp;src=typed_query\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social media<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OcasioCortez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accounts<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rev.com\/blog\/transcripts?s=aoc+cellular+agriculture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">speeches<\/a> turned up no instances of her saying the quotes. Nor has she made any mention of cellular agriculture in any <a href=\"https:\/\/ocasio-cortez.house.gov\/search?search_api_fulltext=redefine+natural+food\">press releases<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/search?q=%7B%22source%22%3A%22congrecord%22%2C%22search%22%3A%22alexandria%20ocasio-cortez%20redefine%20natural%20food%22%7D\">congressional record<\/a> shows no instances of Ocasio-Cortez saying such things, either.<\/p>\n<p>The article shown in the Facebook post does not appear on the website of the StarTribune, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/\">Minnesota-based outlet<\/a> of a similar name. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/07\/07\/fact-check-no-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-tweet-olympic-qualification-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: No, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Did Not Send This Tweet About Olympic Qualification Rules)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez has <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aoc\/status\/1092817526399078400?lang=en\">previously<\/a> spoken in favor of eating less meat and dairy to help combat climate change, and in February, she <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AOC\/status\/1362197246675202050?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1362197246675202050%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd-15528455382597133668.ampproject.net%2F2110212130002%2Fframe.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> on Twitter that she would adopt a vegetarian diet for Lent.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time a quote has been incorrectly attributed to Ocasio-Cortez. In June 2020 Check Your Fact <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/06\/18\/fact-check-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-children-raised-state-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debunked<\/a> the baseless claim that she said, \u201cChildren should be raised by the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Check Your Fact reached out to Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s office for comment and will update this piece if a response is provided.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An image shared on Facebook purportedly shows a news article claiming Democratic New York Rep.
